Kobe is the capital of Hyōgo Prefecture in the Kansai region of western Honshu, on the north shore of Osaka Bay. It sits about 35 km west of Osaka and 70 km southwest of Kyoto, in a long, narrow strip between the sea and the Rokkō mountains. The port opened to foreign trade in 1868 and became a gateway for Western goods and culture. You can still see that in Kitano-chō, a hillside district of Western-style houses called ijinkan along Yamamoto-dōri. The city is also known for Kobe beef, raised in Hyōgo Prefecture, and for Arima Onsen, one of Japan's best-known hot spring resorts.
A day trip from Osaka or Kyoto works well, or you can stay one or two nights for the harbor and Arima Onsen. Walk the port area, Kitano-chō and Nankinmachi, then ride up Mount Rokkō for the view over the city and harbor. Autumn is the best season for the mountain, when its forests change color. Spring and autumn are pleasant for walking the city, while July is the wettest month and August the hottest.

Read the guideKōbe FAQ
Is Kobe worth visiting?
Yes, for a half day or a full day from Osaka. The harbor, the Kitano hillside and a beef lunch make an easy change from Kyoto's temples. If you have only two days in Kansai, spend them in Kyoto and Osaka first.
How do you get from Osaka to Kobe?
Take the JR special rapid from Osaka Station to Sannomiya, 20–25 minutes. Hankyu from Umeda and Hanshin from Umeda run there too, and all three take an IC card.
Is Kobe beef worth the price?
It can be, but book a lunch set rather than dinner and ask for the certificate and grade. If the price is far below what you expect, it is likely another Japanese beef, which is still good.
Is it worth staying overnight in Kobe?
Only for Arima Onsen or a harbor evening. Otherwise Osaka is 20–25 minutes away and has far more places to eat late.
How far is Himeji Castle from Kobe?
About 40 minutes west of Sannomiya by JR special rapid. Entry for non-residents costs ¥2,500 since March 1, 2026, so plan a full morning.
What is Arima Onsen known for?
Two spring types: the reddish-brown iron-rich kinsen (gold) and the clear ginsen (silver). Public baths take day visitors, and the town is 30–40 minutes from Sannomiya.
