Srinagar is the largest city and summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, set in the Kashmir Valley of northern India. The city sits on the Jhelum River at about 1,700 to 1,730 metres above sea level, between the Hari Parbat and Shankaracharya hills. Dal Lake is the main draw, where houseboats, floating markets and shikara wooden boats fill the water, busiest in the evenings. Mughal gardens such as Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh lie along its shore. Houseboats were built for British officers escaping the summer heat.

Other stops include Hazratbal Shrine on the lake shore, Jama Masjid and the view from Shankaracharya Temple. Shoppers look for Kashmir shawls, papier-mâché, carpets and dried fruits. July daytime temperatures average about 30°C, while winters bring moderate to heavy snow and autumn is the driest season. Plan several days for the lake and the old city, plus day trips to Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam.

  2. Check your own government's advice tooOther governments publish their own advice for the region, and it can change quickly. Look up your own foreign ministry's page and re-check it close to departure.
  3. Do not book non-refundable plansIf you plan anything here at all, avoid non-refundable houseboats, flights or tours, and ask insurers in writing what is excluded. Advice can tighten or ease at short notice.
  4. Look at other mountain regions meanwhileIndia's other hill regions are covered in separate guides. Himachal's hill station of Shimla and the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand are options for mountain scenery.Shimla travel guide

What is Srinagar known for?

Dal Lake and its houseboats, the shikara boats, the Mughal gardens on the lakeshore and the old city with its wooden shrines and mosques. Shawls, saffron and walnut woodwork are the local crafts.

Warm summers with highs around 30 degrees Celsius in July, cool autumns and cold winters when highs stay below 10 degrees and snow is common. Spring and autumn bring the most reliable clear days.

Our India guide covers regions where travel is not restricted by government advice, including Himachal's Shimla and Uttarakhand, with seasons, trains and permits explained.
