Khajuraho is a small town near Chhatarpur in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Its medieval temples, built under the Chandela dynasty roughly between 950 and 1050 CE, are Hindu and Jain and form the largest such group in India. Many carry carved gods, dancers, scenes of daily life and the erotic sculptures the site is known for.
The Khajuraho Group of Monuments has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The temples fall into Western, Eastern and Southern groups. The Eastern group holds the Jain temples in one compound. Start at the Western group, which has most of the temples, including the large Kandariya Mahadev. Plan one day for the main temples and a second for the Jain temples, the Southern group and the museums. Trains and a small airport link the town to Delhi and other cities.
Khajuraho in five
- See the Western Group in soft lightThe main temples sit inside one walled garden. Go at opening or late afternoon, when the stone is warm and quieter, and allow two to three hours with a guide for the carvings.Madhya Pradesh
- Hire a guide for the carvingsThe sculptures cover daily life, mythology and dance, and a guide helps decode them. Agree the price and what the entry ticket includes before the tour starts.
- Plan the route from Orchha or AgraOrchha is about 4 hours by road, and Agra is a long day; many travelers combine Khajuraho with Orchha and Varanasi by train and car. Check the airport's flights too, as services are limited.Orchha
- Add the Eastern and Southern groups on a bicycleThe village's other temples are a short ride from the Western Group, and the Jain temples feel quieter. Cycling is a good fit in the cooler months.
- Visit in winterFrom October to March days are mild, and a February dance festival adds performances in front of the temples; check the date with the tourism board. April to June is very hot.Agra

How many days do you need in Khajuraho?
One night is enough for the temple groups and a sunset walk. Add a second day for Panna National Park or the Eastern group on a bicycle.
Is Khajuraho worth visiting?
Yes for the sculpture, which is among the finest in India, and for the quiet village feel. It sits off the usual Agra, Jaipur loop, so it suits travelers with at least two weeks.
How do you get to Khajuraho?
By small airport with limited flights, by train to Khajuraho or Mahoba, or by road from Orchha in about 4 hours. Check current flight and train schedules before you build the route around them.
Are the Khajuraho temples only erotic?
No. Most carvings show gods, musicians, warriors and daily life; a small share are erotic and are usually on the outer walls. A guide helps explain the symbolism in context.
When is the Khajuraho Dance Festival?
It is usually held in February at the Western Group, but the dates change each year. Confirm them with the Madhya Pradesh tourism website before booking a room.
