Agra is a city of about 1.6 million people on the Yamuna river in Uttar Pradesh, northern India. Most visitors come for the Taj Mahal, a white marble mausoleum that Shah Jahan built for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. Agra Fort lies about 1.6 km west of the Taj. Shah Jahan was held there by his son Aurangzeb and spent his last eight years looking across the river at his wife's tomb. Fatehpur Sikri, a deserted Mughal city, is the third of Agra's UNESCO sites.
Plan for the heat and smog. Winter, roughly October to March, is the best time to visit, though winter fog often delays trains. Summers are hot and dry, and air pollution is high, so schedule outdoor sightseeing for early morning. The Gatiman Express covers the Agra-Delhi trip in about 100 minutes, and the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.

Is the Taj Mahal open every day?
No. It is closed on Fridays, when the complex is used for prayers. On other days it opens around sunrise and closes around sunset; check the official site for current hours.
How much is the Taj Mahal ticket for foreigners?
Foreign visitors pay a higher rate than Indian citizens, plus a separate extra fee to enter the main mausoleum. The Archaeological Survey of India sets prices and revises them, so check its official ticket page before you go.
Should I stay overnight in Agra?
If you can. It lets you see the Taj at sunrise, when the light is best and the grounds are quieter, and visit Agra Fort after.
When is the best time to visit the Taj Mahal?
November to March for cooler weather, though winter mornings can be foggy and hide the view. April to June is very hot. Go at opening for softer light and fewer people.
Is Agra worth visiting beyond the Taj Mahal?
Yes. Agra Fort is a major Mughal fort, and Fatehpur Sikri is about an hour away by road. One night in Agra allows sunrise at the Taj and the fort in the same trip.
