Jaipur is the capital and largest city of Rajasthan, in north-western India. It is known as the Pink City because the old walled core is painted pink. The color was applied in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales, Albert Edward, and many avenues remain pink today. Sawai Jai Singh II, the Kachhwaha Rajput ruler of Amer, founded the city in 1727 and named it after himself. Its streets were laid out by architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya using Vastu Shastra and Shilpa Shastra principles, which makes it one of India's earliest planned cities.
Amer Fort, about 11 km from the city center, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the earlier capital of the Kachhwaha rulers. In the city, the City Palace, the Hawa Mahal with its 953 windows and the Jantar Mantar observatory are the main sights. Jaipur is also part of the Western Golden Triangle with Delhi and Agra, and it is a common base for trips to other Rajasthan destinations. Winter, from about November to February, is mild and dry, and the cooler months suit sightseeing best.

- Reach Amer Fort before the tour busesAmer sits about 11 km north of the old city. Go in the first hours of the day, when courtyards are cool and quiet, then spend the afternoon in the Pink City. Many travelers walk the ramp or take a jeep rather than ride an elephant.
- Ask about the composite ticket at your first monumentJaipur has sold a combined ticket covering several main monuments over a couple of days. Ask at the first counter whether it is on offer and what it covers before you pay for single entries.Jaipur in 2 or 3 days
- Book the Delhi train before you flyDaytime expresses from Delhi take about 4.5 to 5 hours and sell out first. Reserve on IRCTC or at a station tourist counter, and keep a car and driver as the fallback.Transport planning
- Plan around heat and the festival weeksFrom April to June daytime highs pass 35 °C, so winter is the season. The Jaipur Literature Festival, usually late January or early February, and Holi week fill the old-city hotels early.Rajasthan guide

Jaipur FAQ
How many days do you need in Jaipur?
Two full days cover Amer Fort, the City Palace, Hawa Mahal and the old bazaars. A third day gives you Jantar Mantar, block-printing workshops or a stepwell trip without rushing. One day is possible but tiring and hot.
Is Jaipur worth visiting?
Yes, for forts, palaces and bazaars that are among the best preserved in northern India. It is loud, crowded and very hot outside winter, so plan between October and March and expect touts around the main gates.
What is the best time to visit Jaipur?
November to February has cool days and clear skies. March warms up, April to June is very hot, and the July to September monsoon brings humidity and heavy showers that rarely stop sightseeing for long.
Can you visit Jaipur as a day trip from Delhi?
Technically yes by early train or car, but it means 9 to 10 hours of travel for a few hours of sightseeing. Stay at least one night, ideally two, so Amer Fort is not a rush.
How do you get from Jaipur to Agra?
By road it takes about 4.5 to 5.5 hours, and many travelers hire a driver and stop at Fatehpur Sikri or Abhaneri on the way. Check IRCTC for current trains before choosing between rail and road.
