Pushkar is a small holy town in Rajasthan, in northwestern India, built around a lake that Hindus consider sacred. Pilgrims bathe on the stone ghats and visit Brahma Temple, one of the few temples in India dedicated to the god Brahma. Most of the old town is a short walk from the water, so daily life centers on the lake: bathing in the morning and ceremonies at dusk.
Pushkar sits a short drive from Ajmer, a larger city nearby, and works as a slow stop on a Rajasthan route. The town is compact enough to cover on foot. Plan at least two nights to see the lake, a hilltop sunset and the market. The cooler months, roughly October to March, are the usual choice. The camel fair in late autumn brings large crowds into town, so book rooms early if you plan your trip around it.
Pushkar in five
- Decide before the camel fairThe Pushkar Camel Fair in the autumn fills hotels and raises rates steeply. If you want it, book months ahead; if you do not, travel a week either side for a calmer town.Rajasthan
- Remove shoes and put cameras away at the ghatsThe 52 bathing ghats around the lake are holy, and photography at the water is restricted. Follow signs and local advice, and walk barefoot.
- Politely decline unsolicited puja offersSelf-styled priests may offer to guide you through a flower ritual and ask for a large donation afterward. You can say no, or agree on any offering with an official priest before you start.
- Treat Pushkar as vegetarian and alcohol-freeThe town bans meat, eggs and alcohol in its core. Cafes cater to travelers with menu variety, but check your hotel's rules if you expect a drink.
- Fly into Jaipur or take the train to AjmerAjmer is the nearest main railhead, about 14 km away, and taxis cover the final stretch. Jaipur is 2.5–3 hours by road.Jaipur

Read the guidePushkar FAQ
Is Pushkar worth visiting?
Yes for the lake, the ghats and an easy day or two on a Rajasthan loop. It is quiet outside the fair and gets crowded in season.
When is the Pushkar Camel Fair?
It falls in the autumn around the full moon of Kartik, a date that moves each year. Confirm the dates with Rajasthan tourism before you book.
How many days do you need in Pushkar?
One night for the ghats, the Brahma temple and a hilltop sunset. Two nights if you want to slow down or visit Ajmer.
Can you drink alcohol or eat meat in Pushkar?
Not in the core of the town, where meat, eggs and alcohol are banned. Look further out or in Ajmer if that matters.
How do you get from Jaipur to Pushkar?
By road in about 2.5–3 hours, or by train to Ajmer and a short taxi. Private cars are the most flexible.
