Rajasthan is a state in northwestern India, and most of its famous sights are forts and palaces built by Rajput rulers. Jaipur, the capital, is called the Pink City for the rose-colored walls of its old quarter. Jodhpur's blue-painted houses cluster below a hilltop fort. Jaisalmer is built of honey-colored sandstone near the Thar Desert, and Udaipur sits beside lakes with palaces on the water.
The route suits a first visit to India that mixes sightseeing with markets, desert trips and long train rides. Winter, from October to March, is the usual season because the days are mild and the forts are comfortable to walk. Summer, from April to June, is very hot in the desert. Plan about a week for the four main cities at a steady pace. Jaipur and Jodhpur are about five to six hours apart by train.
Rajasthan in five
- Go between October and MarchBy May, Jaipur is over 40 °C. Winter mornings are cool enough for a jacket, and clear skies suit the forts.
- Take the Delhi to Jaipur trainThe fastest trains take about 4.5 hours. Book on IRCTC well ahead in winter.Jaipur
- Book overnight berths earlyJaipur to Jaisalmer is an overnight run, and the AC berths go first.
- Check Jaipur's combined sight ticketJaipur sells a combined ticket for several state-run sights. Check which sights it covers and how long it is valid before you buy single tickets.
- Choose three cities, not fiveJaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur are far apart, and each deserves two nights. Pick by what you want: palaces, a blue old city or lakes.Jaipur, Jodhpur or Udaipur

How many days do you need in Rajasthan?
Ten to twelve days covers Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur with two nights each and travel days between them. With a week, pick two cities and skip the rest.
Which Rajasthan city is best for a first visit?
Jaipur, for Amer Fort, the Pink City and easy trains from Delhi. Udaipur adds lakes and a calmer pace, and Jodhpur gives a blue old city under a big fort.
Is Rajasthan too hot to visit in summer?
Often, yes. Highs pass 40 °C in May and June, and the monsoon follows from about June to September. Winter, from October to March, is the comfortable season.
How do you get around Rajasthan?
Trains link the main cities, including overnight runs, and a car with a driver suits forts and villages between them. Book trains on IRCTC ahead in winter.
Should I add the Thar desert to a Rajasthan trip?
Only with eight or more days. Jaisalmer and a desert camp are a long overnight train or drive from Jaipur, so skip them on a shorter trip and spend the time in the main cities.
