Udaipur is a lake city in southern Rajasthan, in northwestern India. Maharana Udai Singh II of the Mewar dynasty founded it in 1559 on the shore of Lake Pichola. The City Palace, which the Mewar rulers built over several centuries, stands on the lake's eastern side, and its courtyards and halls are the first stop for most visitors. Island palaces on the water and stone steps down to the shore, called ghats, line the old town.
Udaipur is a slower stop than the fort-heavy cities of Rajasthan. Travelers who want a break from forts come for the lakeside evenings and boat rides. Winter, roughly October to March, is the cooler season and the most comfortable time for walking the old town and boating. Summer is hot, and the monsoon from July to September brings heavy rain. Two nights cover the old town, the City Palace and a boat ride on Lake Pichola. Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur are day trips for a third day.
Udaipur in five
- Sleep by the lake, not near the stationThe Old City around Gangaur Ghat and the Ambrai Ghat side have the views and the evening walks. The station area is cheaper but 2 km or so away. Pick by view versus price.Where to stay in Udaipur
- Visit the City Palace at opening timeThe palace complex is large and fills with tour groups by late morning. Opening hours and ticket categories change, so check the official site before you go, and allow two hours.Udaipur in 2 days
- Take a lake boat in the late afternoonBoat rides on Lake Pichola run from the City Palace jetty and give the best light on the palace and the ghats near sunset. Ask for the last departure time, and agree what the ticket includes.
- Make Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur one long dayThe Kumbhalgarh fort and the Ranakpur Jain temples are roughly two hours each way and fit one day with a driver. Dress for temples, and leave early to keep daylight on the road.
- Compare Udaipur with Jaipur and JodhpurUdaipur is calmer and greener, Jaipur is bigger and busier, Jodhpur is blue and fort-heavy. If you only have a few days in Rajasthan, the versus guide settles it.Udaipur vs Jaipur vs Jodhpur

Udaipur FAQ
How many days do you need in Udaipur?
Two nights cover the City Palace, a lake boat, the ghats and a sunset viewpoint. A third day adds Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur, or Chittorgarh. Skip a fourth unless you want a slow, lake-side stay.
What is the best time to visit Udaipur?
October to March is the comfortable window, with clear skies and cooler evenings. April to June is very hot. The monsoon fills the lakes and turns the hills green, but it is humid and some activities slow.
Where should I stay in Udaipur?
In the Old City near Gangaur Ghat for walkability, or at Ambrai Ghat across the lake for views and quiet evenings. Pick the station area only if you need the cheapest bed.
Is Udaipur worth visiting compared with Jaipur?
Yes if you want a slower, lake-centered city. Jaipur has more sights and more crowds. Udaipur is smaller, more romantic and easier to walk, so it suits a shorter stay.
Can you see Udaipur in one day?
You can, but it is rushed. One day covers the City Palace, Jagdish Temple and a boat ride. You miss the quiet evening hours, which are the main reason travelers come to Udaipur.
