Jodhpur is a city in western Rajasthan, on the edge of the Thar Desert. Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan founded it in 1459, and the old city grew up below the ridge where Mehrangarh Fort stands. Go for the fort, whose museum shows the palaces and collections of the Rathore rulers, and for the blue-painted houses that give the old quarter its nickname, the Blue City.

Most visitors spend their time in Sardar Market, a maze of narrow lanes near the Ghanta Ghar clock tower where spices, textiles and handicrafts are sold. Umaid Bhawan Palace, built in the 1930s and 1940s, is partly a hotel. October to March is the most comfortable season, with cooler days. Jodhpur suits travelers who want history and a desert-edge city without a long schedule. Two nights is enough to see the fort, walk the old city and spend a morning in the market.

Jodhpur in five

  1. Visit Mehrangarh Fort early, then walk downThe fort sits on a cliff above the old city. Go when it opens to beat the heat, use the audio guide for the museum rooms, then walk down through the lanes into the market.Rajasthan guide
  2. Wander Brahmpuri for the blue housesThe blue-washed lanes below the fort are lived-in neighborhoods, so keep voices low, ask before photographing doorways and watch for scooters in narrow lanes.
  3. Eat and shop around the Clock TowerSardar Market and the Clock Tower square are the old city's center for spices, textiles and snacks. Go in the late afternoon, and eat the local sweets and lassi at counters with a queue.
  4. Add Jodhpur between Jaisalmer and UdaipurJodhpur is the natural hinge in a western Rajasthan loop: about 5 hours by road from Jaisalmer and from Udaipur. Book trains early or hire a car and driver.Udaipur
  5. Pick the right seasonWinter days are ideal for the fort's stone staircases. From April the old city heats up quickly, and midday walking becomes unpleasant.

Jodhpur FAQ

How many days do you need in Jodhpur?

Two nights give you Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, the Blue City lanes and an evening in the market without hurry. One night works only as a stop between Jaisalmer and Udaipur.

Why is Jodhpur called the Blue City?

Many old houses around Mehrangarh are painted blue, a color traditionally linked to Brahmin households, though the habit has spread. The best view of the blue lanes is from the fort walls.

Is Jodhpur or Jaipur better?

Jaipur has more big monuments and a bigger city; Jodhpur is more compact with one huge fort and an easier old-city pace. Pick Jaipur first if you only have time for one.

Is Jodhpur worth visiting?

Yes. Mehrangarh Fort is one of the strongest forts in Rajasthan and the old city is walkable. It is a smaller, quieter stop than Jaipur but needs a full day to see properly.

How do you get from Jodhpur to Udaipur?

About 5 to 6 hours by road, which makes a car and driver the common choice. Check trains and buses on the day, because services are limited and times vary.
