The Holi guide
The ten days
Holi is the festival of colors, and in most of India it is a single day. In Braj, the Krishna country around Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, it lasts about ten. The anchors in 2027 are Holika Dahan, the bonfire, on the evening of Sunday 21 March, and Rangwali Holi, the day of colors, on Monday 22 March. The Mathura window for the bonfire is about 6:31pm to 8:53pm.
The events before them are listed as expected dates, because the temples confirm them close to the day. A Mathura tourism site lists Phulera Dooj on 10 March, Barsana's Laddu Holi around 15 March, Lathmar Holi in Barsana around 16 March and in Nandgaon around 17 March. Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan starts its Holi celebrations on the evening of Amla Ekadashi, 18 March, and runs them until Holika Dahan on the 21st. The festival closes with Dauji Ka Huranga in Baldeo, the day after the colors.
The 2026 sequence shows how the days follow each other. Laddu Holi in Barsana was on 24 February, Barsana's Lathmar Holi on the 25th, Nandgaon's on the 26th, flower Holi in Vrindavan on the 27th, the bonfire on 3 March, colors on the 4th and Huranga in Baldeo on the 5th.
Where it comes from
The bonfire recalls the legend of Holika, the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, who was said to be immune to fire. The king had her sit in a blaze with his son Prahlad, a devotee of Vishnu. Holika burned and Prahlad survived, and the Holika Dahan bonfires on the eve of Holi mark that triumph of good over evil.
Braj adds its own stories, tied to Krishna's childhood and courtship of Radha. Barsana's Laddu Holi and Lathmar Holi are said by local tradition to come from Krishna's visit to Barsana to play Holi with Radha and the gopis. In Vrindavan the custom at the Banke Bihari Temple is flowers rather than powder: priests shower the deity and then the crowd with rose and marigold petals, and the colors come later, outside the temple gates. The temple was established in 1864 by followers of the saint Swami Haridas.
In 2013 widows living in Vrindavan played Holi at the Gopinath Temple with support from Sulabh International, according to news reports. The event is held on dates that change by year.
Town by town
Barsana
Barsana's Radha Rani Temple hosts Laddu Holi, when sweets are thrown from the temple balcony, usually between 3pm and 5pm. Lathmar Holi follows the next day: women chase men with sticks while the men crouch behind shields. Outlook Traveller advises arriving before noon, because the crowds near the temple steps get dense and the approach roads congest quickly. In earlier years the district divided the fair area into zones and sectors with barriers, parking slots and temporary field hospitals.
Nandgaon
Nandgaon holds its Lathmar Holi the day after Barsana, with the roles reversed. It takes place at the Nand Bhawan Temple on a hill. Outlook Traveller says to arrive in the morning, because movement becomes difficult by early afternoon.
Vrindavan
At the Banke Bihari Temple, priests shower devotees with flower petals instead of powder. Entry is free, but access can be paused to manage numbers, and mornings are calmer. The ISKCON and Radha Raman temples also hold flower celebrations; ISKCON focuses on kirtans and Radha Raman on a quieter aarti. Photography is often restricted, especially inside Banke Bihari. For the traditional temple Holi, the Mathura tourism site advises arriving around 18 March or earlier.
Mathura
Mathura holds the Holika Dahan bonfires, with major gatherings near Vishram Ghat and the Dwarkadhish Temple. On colour day the Dwarkadhish area fills with powder, and Outlook Traveller advises arriving around 9am. Midday becomes slow and hazy with colour.
Baldeo
Baldeo's Dauji Temple, about 30 km from Mathura, holds the Huranga on the day after colour day. Outlook Traveller describes it as less touristy, with women playfully tearing at men's clothes while colour is thrown. It starts around noon, so arrive by 10am.
Where to sleep
Base yourself in Mathura. Outlook Traveller recommends it for the better choice of hotels and for day trips to Vrindavan, Barsana, Nandgaon and Baldeo. Vrindavan puts you at the Banke Bihari Temple for the early-morning flower Holi, and it is the one to choose if the temple days are the point of the trip. Book rooms and private AC transport early, the Mathura tourism site says, because transfers between Barsana, Nandgaon and Gokul take longer on festival days.
- Base for day trips to Vrindavan, Barsana and Nandgaon
- Roads fill on festival days
How many days
Outlook Traveller suggests at least three to four days to take in Lathmar Holi, the flower Holi in Vrindavan and the main colour day. The Mathura tourism site suggests four to five days for a first visit, covering Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana and Nandgaon, and optionally Gokul and Govardhan. It also says to keep the plan flexible, because crowd control, traffic diversions and vehicle restrictions change day to day.
Staying safe
Outlook Traveller calls Holi in Braj safe but crowded. Travel in groups, avoid isolated lanes, follow temple and local guidelines, and do not navigate packed lanes alone if you are a woman. Keep phones, wallets and cameras in waterproof pouches, wear clothes you will not miss and shoes with grip, because the streets get slippery. Go easy on bhang and thandai, and drink water; March afternoons are warm.
What to skip
Do not trust a Lathmar Holi date until the temples publish it. The 2027 dates here come from a tourism site and are marked expected, and the Mathura tourism site itself advises confirming them with the temples and the Mathura district administration before booking.
Do not plan to see Barsana and Nandgaon in the afternoon. Outlook Traveller says Nandgaon is hard to move in by early afternoon, and the roads between the two towns are slow in Holi week.
