Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh

Go for Tawang's high Buddhist monastery, the Apatani rice terraces of Ziro and long mountain roads in northeast India.

Arunachal Pradesh is an Indian state on the Himalayan edge of the far northeast. It borders Bhutan, China and Myanmar. Its people include more than two dozen major tribal communities, each with its own languages, festivals and village traditions. Compared with the plains of north India, the state has forested hills, deep river valleys and villages often far from the nearest town.

Tawang is the best-known stop: a high-altitude town with a large Buddhist monastery and the mountain roads that lead there. Ziro Valley, home of the Apatani people and their terraced rice fields, is the other common base, and Namdapha National Park in the east suits wildlife and forest trails. Roads are slow and hotels are few outside the main towns, so plan five to seven days and check permit rules before booking, since they change. March to May and October to November have the clearest skies and drier roads. Monsoon rain from June to September brings landslides and road closures.
