Dharamsala is a town in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, in northern India, and the district headquarters. It sits in the Kangra Valley below the Dhauladhar range. The Upper town, around McLeod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj at about 1,830 m, sits above the commercial Lower town at about 1,380 m, and a narrow road links the two. The Dalai Lama lives in the Upper town, and the Central Tibetan Administration, the Tibetan government-in-exile, has been based here since 1960.

Go for the Tibetan monasteries and the Tibet Museum in McLeod Ganj, the Bhagsu Nath Temple about 2 km above it, and sunrise views from Naddi Viewpoint over the snow-capped Dhauladhar range. Treks run from the town across the Himalayas toward the upper Ravi Valley. Autumn, from October to late November, is the mildest season, with average temperatures around 16 to 17°C. The monsoon, from June to mid-September, is heavy, and winter brings snow to the Upper town.

Dharamsala FAQ

How many days do you need in Dharamsala?

Two to three days cover McLeod Ganj, the Tibetan temple complex and one hike. Add two more for Triund, Bir or Kangra Fort, and a day to rest after an overnight bus.

Is Dharamsala the same as McLeod Ganj?

Not quite. Lower Dharamsala is the main town, while McLeod Ganj is a hill suburb above it that holds the Tibetan quarter. Most visitors stay in McLeod Ganj and pass through Dharamsala only on the way.

What is the best time to visit Dharamsala?

March to May and October to November, when it is mild and clear. Winters are cold with snow on the peaks, and July to September bring heavy monsoon rain and landslides.

How do I get from Delhi to Dharamsala?

By overnight bus in roughly 10 to 12 hours, by train to Pathankot and then a road transfer, or by flight to Kangra with a short taxi ride. Buses are the cheapest and most direct.

Is Triund hard?

It is a moderate, steep day hike on a well-used trail, not technical. Start early, wear proper shoes, carry water, and turn back if weather changes.
