Manali is a town at about 2,000 meters in the Beas River valley of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, in northern India. It has two main areas. Old Manali, a few kilometers north, is a village of wooden houses, cafés and trailheads. Mall Road, in the newer center, has hotels, shops and restaurants. Hadimba Temple, a wooden shrine in a cedar forest, is one of the older sights nearby.

Manali works well as a base for the valleys around it. Solang Valley, about 14 kilometers up the valley from town, has snow for skiing in winter and paragliding in warmer months. The road north passes through the Atal Tunnel under Rohtang Pass toward Lahaul, and in summer it continues to Leh in Ladakh. Plan at least two or three nights for the town and its valleys. Spring and autumn have the easiest weather. Winter brings snow and road closures, and the Leh road is open only in the warmer months.

Manali in five

  1. Plan the road in daylightThe drive from Delhi or Chandigarh is long and winding. Many take an overnight bus or a daytime car with a driver, and allow time for landslide delays in the rainy months.Chandigarh
  2. Base in Old Manali for cafés, Mall Road for easeOld Manali is quieter and café-led across the river, while the Mall Road side has more hotels and shops. Pick based on whether you want atmosphere or easy transport.
  3. Check Rohtang and tunnel access before you goThe Atal Tunnel gives all-season access to Lahaul, while Rohtang Pass has its own permit and closure rules. Confirm current arrangements locally.
  4. Check the Leh road if you go northThe Manali to Leh highway opens only in the warmer months and takes about two days with an overnight stop. Confirm status with your driver before you leave.Leh
  5. Avoid peak weekendsWeekends and holiday weeks bring heavy traffic to the valley. Book mid-week stays and avoid the Mall Road on busy evenings.Shimla
