Himachal Pradesh is a mountain state in the western Himalayas, in northern India, and its capital is Shimla. It shares a border with Tibet to the east. Travelers come for the hill towns the British used as summer retreats, for the Tibetan community and the Dalai Lama's home at McLeod Ganj above Dharamsala, and for the valleys around Manali that run north toward Lahaul and Spiti.
The state suits people who want mountain air, walking and a slower pace than the plains. Plan a week to ten days, enough to base in one or two towns and add a short trek. Pick towns by what you want: McLeod Ganj for monasteries, Manali for the high valleys, Shimla for colonial buildings and the toy train. The best months are April to June and September to October, when the roads are usually open and the skies are clear. Monsoon rain from July to August brings landslides and road closures, and winter brings snow to the higher places.
Himachal Pradesh in five
- Check Rohtang Pass access before you plan ManaliRohtang Pass is closed in winter and needs a permit, and monsoon landslides can shut roads. Ask your driver or hotel for the current status before you book a day trip over it.
- Carry rupee cash for hill villagesATMs are scarce in smaller villages, and some guesthouses take only cash. Withdraw enough in the larger towns before you climb.Money and costs
- Get a local SIM with your passportIndian SIM sales need your passport, visa and a local address, so set this up on arrival. Signal drops on the hill roads, so download offline maps before you leave town.Phones and eSIM
- Book Kalka to Shimla toy train seatsThe Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge railway is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its seats sell out in peak season. Book through the official Indian Railways booking site and carry your passport for the ticket check.Getting around
- Remove shoes and dress modestly at monasteriesTemples and monasteries in McLeod Ganj and Dharamsala ask visitors to take off their shoes and cover up. Walk clockwise around prayer wheels and stupas, and ask before photographing inside a hall.

Which Himachal hill station is best?
McLeod Ganj for Tibetan culture and short treks, Manali for mountains and Solang Valley, Shimla for colonial buildings and the toy train. Pick one base and give it three or four days.
Can you visit Himachal without a car?
Yes. Buses link Shimla, Manali and Dharamsala, and the Kalka-Shimla toy train runs to Shimla. Taxis and shared jeeps cover the last stretch to most villages.
How many days do you need in Himachal?
A week covers two bases such as McLeod Ganj and Manali. Roads are slow, so do not plan more than two bases in one trip.
When is the best time to visit Himachal Pradesh?
April to June and September to October, when the roads are usually open and the skies are clear. July and August bring monsoon rain and landslides.
Is McLeod Ganj worth visiting?
Yes, for the Tibetan monasteries, the Triund trek and a slower pace than Manali. It is busy in peak season.
Do you need a permit to visit Spiti or Kinnaur?
Some parts of these districts need a permit for foreign visitors, but not all of them. Check with the district office or your hotel before you book.
