McLeod Ganj is the upper town of Dharamsala, in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, northern India. It is the seat of the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration, so Tibetan monasteries, prayer wheels and Tibetan restaurants are part of everyday life. The main road is busy and the lanes climb steeply, so expect a walk uphill from the lower town.

Most travelers come for the Dhauladhar range rising behind the town and for walks such as the trek to Triund. It suits slow travelers, trekkers and anyone who wants a cooler base than the plains cities. Pick a place to stay by how much uphill walking you want each day. Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, bring the clearest views. The monsoon, from July to August, brings heavy rain and slippery trails. Plan at least three or four days, and more if you want to trek.

  2. Stay in the center or on the slopesThe main square has shops, cafes and Tibetan monasteries; Dharamkot and Bhagsu sit above and below it with a quieter feel. Decide if you want walkable dinners or an early start on the Triund trail.
  3. Respect the Tsuglagkhang complex rulesThe Dalai Lama's temple and the Tibetan museum are places of practice. Dress modestly, remove shoes at the doors and check the day's opening hours, since teachings and events change access.
