Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana, in southern India. The city sits on the Deccan Plateau beside the Musi River. The Qutb Shahi rulers shaped much of its old core. Golconda Fort stands on a granite hill on the western side of the city, and the Charminar, a stone gateway with four arches, was completed in 1591 under Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. Their tombs stand a short distance from the fort. Visitors come for this history, for the pearl bazaars near the Charminar, and for Hyderabadi biryani, a dish of layered rice and meat.
Give the city two days to see the old city, the fort and the tombs without rushing. Spend one day on the Charminar area and the bazaars, and another on Golconda and the tombs. A third day leaves room for a trip to Warangal or Ramoji Film City. October to March is the most comfortable window for walking between sites, because the summer heat is intense.
Hyderabad in five
- Explore the old city on foot in the eveningCharminar, the Laad Bazaar bangle market and Mecca Masjid sit within a short walk. Go late afternoon, when it is cooler and the lights come on, and expect crowds and tight lanes.
- Visit Golconda Fort in the morningThe ruined fortress on the west side has stepped ramparts and a famed acoustic trick at the gate. Start early to climb to the top before the heat, and ask about the evening sound-and-light show.
- Check Salar Jung Museum timingThe large collection is a half-day visit and the museum normally closes on Fridays. Confirm opening days before you go, and plan it around old-city sightseeing.
- Eat biryani, haleem and Irani chaiHyderabadi biryani is the signature meal, and haleem fills the stalls in the weeks around Ramadan. Irani cafes serve strong tea and bun maska at any hour.
- Allow time for the airport runThe international airport is on the outskirts, about 25–30 km from the center, with airport buses and app cabs. Leave early in the evening rush.Getting around India

How many days do you need in Hyderabad?
Two days cover Charminar, Golconda Fort, the Qutb Shahi Tombs and biryani. Add a third day for Salar Jung Museum or Ramoji Film City, and a fourth for Warangal.
Is Hyderabad worth visiting?
Yes for food, Deccan history and a city with fewer visitors than Delhi or Jaipur. It is spread out, so plan cab hops and group sights by area.
Where should I stay in Hyderabad?
The old city for atmosphere, Banjara Hills for restaurants and comfort, HITEC City for business and the airport road. Avoid the far suburbs, because traffic eats your day.
What is the best time to visit Hyderabad?
October to February, when days are comfortable. March to May is hot, and June to September brings monsoon showers. Ramadan changes food stall hours and brings haleem.
How do you get from Hyderabad to Hampi?
Overnight bus or train to Hosapete, taking roughly 8 to 10 hours, then a short ride to Hampi. Plan to arrive in the morning and rest before sightseeing.
