Hampi is a village in Karnataka, India, on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. Its ruins are those of Vijayanagara, the capital of a Hindu empire that ruled much of southern India from the 14th to the 17th century. Temples, halls and market streets are spread across a wide area of granite boulders, and the site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many visitors climb the boulder hills to watch the sun rise or set over the ruins.
The two sites most visitors plan around are the Vittala Temple, known for its stone chariot, and the Virupaksha Temple, which is still used for worship. Hampi Bazaar, the old market street beside Virupaksha, is the village's main area for food and guesthouses. Hampi suits travelers interested in history and temple architecture. The sites are spread over a wide area, so most visits involve a good deal of walking. The cooler, drier months from October to February make that walking more comfortable than the hot season.
Hampi in five
- Buy the monument ticket once, at the first siteThe big ASI-run sites, including Vittala Temple, Lotus Mahal and the Royal Enclosure, need entry tickets, and a combined ticket covers several for the day. Check the official ASI e-ticket page for current prices before you pay at a gate.
- Start at sunrise and rest at middayStone floors and open ground get hot by late morning, and the temple stones can burn bare feet. Do Vittala or the hills at first light, nap midday and return for the late-afternoon sun.
- Hire a bike, scooter or auto for the sprawlThe ruins spread across several kilometers, from Virupaksha Temple to the Royal Enclosure. A rented bicycle or scooter gives you control; an auto with a driver is easier in heat.Where to stay in Hampi

Hampi FAQ
How many days do you need in Hampi?
Two full days is the minimum: one for the temples and Royal Enclosure and one for the hills and the river. Three days lets you add Anegundi and a slower pace in the heat.
Is Hampi worth visiting?
Yes if you like ruins in a dramatic landscape and can handle long travel. It is more spread out than most heritage sites and gets hot, so it rewards patience and early starts.
Where should I stay in Hampi?
Hampi Bazaar if you want to be beside the temple, Virupapur Gadde for cafes and quiet, and Hosapete for transport and air-conditioning. Our guide compares each base by transit and price band.
What is the best time to visit Hampi?
November to February, when days are comfortable. March to May is very hot, and monsoon showers from June to September bring green fields but wet roads and fewer visitors.
Can you do Hampi as a day trip from Bengaluru?
Not comfortably. The journey is about 7 to 9 hours each way, so plan an overnight bus or train and at least two nights in Hampi. A day trip leaves you with only a few hours of sightseeing.
