Mysore Palace illuminated with warm golden lights against a dark night sky

Mysuru (Mysore)

Mysuru is the former royal capital of Karnataka in southern India, known for its palace, sandalwood and silk.

Mysuru, often spelled Mysore, is a city in Karnataka in southern India, about three hours by train from Bengaluru. The Wodeyar kings ruled from here, and their palace is still the main sight. Mysore Palace draws most visitors, and Devaraja Market shows daily life, with stalls selling fruit, flowers and spices. The city is also known for sandalwood and silk.

Mysuru suits a trip built around a few sights. Chamundi Hill rises above the city and can be reached by road or by a long flight of steps. The cooler months, roughly October to March, are the easiest time to visit. Dasara, held in autumn, fills the city with processions and crowds, so book early if you plan around it. One to two days covers the main sights. Stay one night if you want to see the palace lit up, which happens on Sundays and public holidays.
