West Bengal is a state in eastern India with Kolkata as its capital. It borders Bangladesh to the east and Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan to the north, so its land runs from the flat Ganges delta up to the Himalayan foothills. Kolkata was the capital of British India until 1911, and its colonial buildings, old tram lines, bookshops and food, from sweets to street snacks, give the city much of its character. Durga Puja in autumn brings decorated pandals and large crowds to the streets.
Many travelers add Darjeeling, a hill station known for its tea gardens, its mountain railway and views of Kanchenjunga on clear mornings. Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri are the gateways to the hills, with New Jalpaiguri station and Bagdogra airport nearby. The clearest mountain views come from March to May and October to November. Plan a few days in Kolkata and a few more in the hills.

How many days do you need in Darjeeling?
Two or three nights covers the town, a sunrise viewpoint and a tea estate. Add a day for the toy train if you want the ride in both directions.
Do you need a permit for Darjeeling?
Most foreign visitors do not need a permit for Darjeeling town itself, but Sikkim requires a Protected Area Permit. Check the current rules with the official sources before you travel.
Is Siliguri worth a stop?
Yes, as a base for arrivals. New Jalpaiguri station is the main rail link and Bagdogra airport is nearby, so an overnight stay helps with late flights or early trains.
How do you get from Siliguri to Darjeeling?
Shared jeeps, buses, taxis and the toy train all make the trip. The road takes several hours, and the toy train is slower, so book seats in advance.
When is the best time to visit Darjeeling?
March to May and October to November give the clearest views. June to September is the monsoon, with heavy rain and landslide risk on the roads.
Is the toy train worth the time?
Yes for the ride. It is slow, so allow extra time if you need to reach Darjeeling by a set hour.
