Alappuzha, also called Alleppey, is a town on the Arabian Sea coast of Kerala, in southwestern India. Its canals, lagoons and rivers are part of the Kerala backwaters. Traditional rice barges, called kettuvallams, once carried cargo here. Many are now converted into houseboats. A typical cruise drifts past paddy fields, coconut groves and village houses. Coir, the fiber from coconut husks, is still spun into rope and mats in local workshops.
It suits slow trips, with couples, families and travelers who want a calm base in Kerala. The town also has a beach, so you can split days between water and sand. The best season is roughly November to February, when the weather is drier and cooler. The monsoon, from June to September, brings heavy rain. Plan at least two nights, so you have time for a full day on the water.
Alappuzha in five
- Book a houseboat with the route in writingOvernight houseboats leave from the boat jetty in Alappuzha town, and boats differ in size, meals and route. Agree the cruise, meals and check-out time in writing before you pay.
- Take the train from Ernakulam JunctionFly into Kochi, then take a taxi or the train from Ernakulam Junction to Alappuzha, which takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.Getting around
- Carry rupees in small notesCard payment is limited on village boats, small stalls and many auto-rickshaws, so keep small rupee notes for boatmen, drivers and tea shops.
- Pack a rain layer from June to SeptemberThe monsoon brings heavy, sudden showers that can soak an open boat deck. A light waterproof jacket and a dry bag for your phone cover most days.
- Set up an eSIM before the backwatersMobile signal thins out on the lake and in the villages. Download offline maps for Alappuzha before you leave the town.Phones and eSIM
