Pune is a city in Maharashtra state in western India, on the Deccan Plateau, and the headquarters of Pune district. It lies about 149 km southeast of Mumbai by road. Under British rule it was called Poona, and it was renamed Pune in 1978, so older maps and signs may still say Poona. Its many universities and colleges have earned it the nickname "Oxford of the East," and it is regarded as Maharashtra's cultural capital.

Go for the historic sites first. Shaniwar Wada, an 18th-century palace on the Mutha riverbank, was completed in 1730. The Aga Khan Palace is where Mahatma Gandhi was held under house arrest from 1942 to 1944. Sinhagad fort, at about 1,300 m, makes a popular day trip. Local food is Maharashtrian, and puneri misal is a popular vegetarian dish. Music fans should plan around the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav, held every December. Winter, from about November to February, is the best time to visit.

Pune in five

  1. Take the expressway from MumbaiThe Mumbai to Pune route is a 3–4 hour road trip or a short train. Trains are comfortable if booked ahead; the road is faster when traffic is light.
  2. Pick the old city or the east sideThe Peth quarters near Shaniwar Wada and Mandai have markets and history; Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar have cafes and hotels. Decide before you book a room.
  3. Add the Aga Khan Palace and SinhagadThe palace is a short ride from the center and is tied to Gandhi's detention. Sinhagad is a hill fort on the edge of town, better before the day heats up.
  4. Plan around the monsoon and Ganesh festivalJune to September brings rain. The Ganesh festival in the late summer fills streets with processions, so expect road diversions and book ahead.
  5. Use Pune as a link to Goa or NashikThe cities on the other side of the Western Ghats are long road days. Flights to Goa are quick, and Nashik is a long haul best treated as a one-way leg.Panaji

How many days do you need in Pune?

One day for the old city and the palace, two with Sinhagad or a hill day. More only if you are using it as a base.

How do you get from Mumbai to Pune?

By train or road in about 3–4 hours. The expressway is faster when traffic is light, and trains are easier on the way back.
