Panaji, also spelled Panjim, is the capital of Goa, a small state on India's west coast. The city sits on the Mandovi river, and the center is small enough to cover on foot. The best-known district is Fontainhas, a grid of narrow lanes with houses painted in bright colors from the years when Portugal ruled Goa. Old Goa, a short trip out, has churches built in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Plan two to three days: walk Fontainhas in the morning, visit the churches on a day trip to Old Goa, and eat dinner by the water in the evening. Choose Panaji if you want a town base with cafés, restaurants and river views rather than a beach strip. November to February is the drier, cooler season and the easiest time to walk the lanes.

Panaji in five

  1. Walk Fontainhas in the early morningThe Latin Quarter's lanes, chapel and colored houses are best before the day heat and tour groups. Respect residents, because these are homes, not a museum.
  2. Pair Panaji with Old Goa for the churchesOld Goa's cathedral and basilica are a short drive from town and form a UNESCO group. Dress modestly for the churches and note that services may limit visits.
  3. Base here to avoid the beach-strip billsPanaji hotels are often cheaper than beach resorts and put you near buses, ferries and restaurants. Beaches are a taxi ride away, so this works for culture-first stays.Goa travel guide
  4. Use the Kadamba bus station and river ferriesState buses link Panaji to the beaches and to Mapusa, and short ferries cross the Mandovi. Taxis in Goa are often metered or fixed by negotiation; ask before you set off.
  5. Time your visit to the dry seasonNovember to February is the busy, dry season. The monsoon from June to September closes many beach shacks and brings heavy rain, though prices fall.
