Odisha is a state on India's east coast, on the Bay of Bengal, with Bhubaneswar as its capital. The state is known for its temples. The Konark Sun Temple, built in the 13th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Jagannath Temple in Puri is one of the most important Hindu shrines in the region, and Bhubaneswar holds many older temples. Chilika Lake, one of Asia's largest brackish-water lagoons, lies near Puri and offers birdlife and boat trips.

Choose Odisha if you want temple architecture, a sea beach and a lagoon on one trip. The best months are the cooler ones, roughly October to March. The monsoon, from June to September, brings heavy rain to the coast. Rath Yatra, the chariot festival in Puri, usually falls in June or July, so confirm the dates before you plan around it.

Odisha in five

  1. Base in Bhubaneswar, then go to the coastThe capital has the airport, the old temple cluster and good rail links, so use it as the hub for Puri, Konark and Chilika. Each is a day trip or an easy overnight.
  2. Plan around the Rath YatraPuri's chariot festival in the monsoon months draws huge crowds and changes road access. Book hotels long before and check the official date for the year.Puri
  3. Book Konark early in the morningThe Sun Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the light and the heat are kinder before late morning. Combine it with Puri on the same day trip.
  4. Know the Jagannath temple ruleThe Puri Jagannath temple admits only Hindus, so non-Hindus will not get inside. Several nearby viewpoints and the festival procession offer a way to see the temple area.
  5. Add Chilika for birds and boat ridesIndia's largest coastal lagoon is a boat-and-birding stop, best from winter into early spring. Go with a local operator and check boat rules before you pay.

    Odisha FAQ

How many days do you need in Odisha?

Four days cover Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark. Five or six add Chilika or a tribal-market area. Avoid cramming the temples into one rushed day.

What is the best time to visit Odisha?

November to February is cool and dry. The coast is hot from March to May, wet from June to September and cyclone-prone in the post-monsoon months.

Is Odisha good for first-time India travelers?

Yes as a second stop, with fewer crowds than Rajasthan or Delhi. It lacks the big-name sights, so many add it after the Golden Triangle.

Can you visit Konark from Puri?

Yes, it is a day trip, about 1–1.5 hours by road from Puri, often combined with a beach stop at Chandrabhaga.

How do you get to Odisha?

Fly to Bhubaneswar from Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata, or take an overnight train from Kolkata or Chennai. Book rail tickets early in the winter months.
