Puri is a coastal town in Odisha, on India's eastern coast facing the Bay of Bengal. It is one of the country's major Hindu pilgrimage centers, and the Jagannath temple is the town's best-known draw. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the main temple, so many visitors watch the life of the town from the streets around it. Each summer, Rath Yatra sends huge wooden chariots along the Grand Road.

Puri works for travelers who want temples and a beach on one trip. Konark, with its Sun Temple, is about 35 km up the coast and is a common day trip from Puri. Plan around the calendar: festival days bring large crowds and higher room rates, and the monsoon months from June to September bring heavy rain. Winter months are the easier time to visit. Two to three nights covers the temple, the beach and a day trip to Konark.

Puri in five

  1. Know the Jagannath temple ruleThe temple admits only Hindus, so non-Hindu visitors will not get in. Respect the rule and do not try to bypass it; the surrounding streets and the Grand Road still carry the atmosphere.
  2. Book early for the Rath YatraThe chariot festival in the monsoon months draws large crowds, with road closures and tight hotels. If you want to attend, reserve a room long ahead and confirm the date for the year.Odisha
  3. Swim where lifeguards patrolThe surf and currents are strong, so swim only in marked zones and listen to local lifeguards. Do not swim at night or after drinking.
  4. Use Puri for Konark by roadThe Sun Temple is about an hour away on the Marine Drive, and many travelers do a morning at Konark and a sunset on the beach. A hired car or taxi works best.
  5. Base in Puri or return to BhubaneswarThe capital is under two hours away, and many visitors day-trip from there. Stay a night or two in Puri if you want sunrise at the sea.

Puri FAQ

Can non-Hindus enter the Jagannath temple?

No, the temple admits only Hindus. Non-Hindu visitors can still walk the surrounding streets and see the festival procession in the open.

Is Puri worth visiting?

Yes for the Jagannath temple area and the beach, particularly during festival season. It is less polished than Goa, and the beach is for walking more than for swimming.

How many days do you need in Puri?

One night lets you see the temple area and the beach at sunrise. Add a day for Konark and Chilika.

When is the Rath Yatra?

It falls in the monsoon months, around June or July, on a date that follows the lunar calendar. Check the official Odisha tourism date for the year you plan.

Is the beach at Puri safe for swimming?

Only with care. Currents are strong, so stay in marked zones and use lifeguards' advice.
