Madurai is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, on the Vaigai River. Its center is the Meenakshi Amman Temple, a large Hindu complex dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi and her husband, Shiva, who is worshipped here as Sundareswarar. The temple's tall gateway towers, called gopurams, can be seen across the old city, and pilgrims and visitors come through from early morning until late at night. Around the temple, narrow streets hold flower sellers, spice and textile shops, and small restaurants serving South Indian food such as dosas, idli and filter coffee.

Madurai suits travelers interested in a working pilgrimage city. Plan at least one full day for the temple, the nearby markets and the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, and come back in the evening if you want to see the nightly ritual. Visit between roughly November and February, when the weather is cooler and walking outdoors is easier than in the hot months. Expect to remove your shoes and dress modestly at the temple.

How do you get from Madurai to Munnar?
