Kovalam is a beach town on the Arabian Sea coast of Kerala, in southern India, a short drive south of Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital. Its beaches sit in curved bays between rocky headlands, with coconut palms along the sand. A red-and-white lighthouse stands on a cliff above Lighthouse Beach, the main strip, and fishing boats still pull up on parts of the shore. Most cafés and shops sit on the lanes above the sand.

People come for a few beach days, long meals at seafront cafés and an Ayurvedic massage at a resort or spa. The sea is calmer from roughly October to March. The southwest monsoon, June to September, brings rough surf and is a poor time to swim. Plan at least three nights. If you want a city stop, add a day in Thiruvananthapuram for its temples and museums.
