Em resumo

Torres del Paine passes are sold on Pases Parques and must be bought at least 24 hours before you enter; foreign adults pay CLP 32,400 for a day or CLP 48,500 for more than two days. To hike the W or the O you must also have reservations at the refugios or campsites for every night, booked with the park's concessionaires. The O is closed until 31 October 2026. Checked 2 Oct 2026.

Torres del Paine is one of the most tightly managed parks in South America. You cannot simply turn up at the gate with a tent. Every visitor needs a park pass bought online in advance, and anyone hiking the multi-day W or O needs a confirmed booking for every night on the trail, at a refugio or a campsite inside the park. This page belongs with the Torres del Paine guide and the wider Chile travel guide, and it explains what to book, in what order, and which rules change with the season.

It affects everyone who visits, from day-trippers on the park road to trekkers spending a week on the trail. The rules come from CONAF, Chile's national forest service, which runs the park, while the refugios and many campsites are run by private concessionaires. The figures and dates below come from CONAF's park site and the Pases Parques sales portal.

The rule now

There are two steps, and both are compulsory for trekkers. First, the park pass, sold on the national parks portal. Second, lodging reservations for the W or the O, made with the operators of the refugios and campsites. Without the lodging booking you cannot enter the mountain area, which is why the second step decides whether the first is of any use.

The rule is on the park's reservation systems page, run by CONAF's Magallanes office. Treat anything else, including resellers' summaries, as secondary and check it against the park and Pases Parques pages.

The park pass

Passes are sold on Pases Parques, the official portal for Chile's national parks and reserves. If a group includes both Chilean nationals and foreigners, the portal says you must make the selection for each in separate processes but add them to the same shopping cart before paying. The price depends on nationality, age and whether you stay more than two days.

The full table is on the park's fees and hours page. Read the fee table by days, not by trek: a day pass for one trip to Base Torres costs less than the multi-day pass, and the table switches to the multi-day price for stays of more than two days, so W and O trekkers are on that price. The multi-day price for a foreign teenager and for an adult is the same figure on the table.

Buy the pass after your lodging is confirmed, since the dates must match. The Pases Parques FAQ is the reason. It says refunds are granted only when the park, reserve or monument is administratively closed under a resolution, and that entry is not allowed if you arrive outside the established last entry time, with no refund. A pass bought before the lodging is secured is a pass you may be unable to use or recover.

Refugios and campsites

Along the W and the O, you sleep in refugios (mountain lodges with beds and meals) or at campsites. CONAF names two concessionaires for the refugios and campsites with facilities inside the park: Las Torres Patagonia and Vértice Patagonia. The park lists both and does not say which operator runs which stop, so check each operator's own site to see which nights it sells before you commit to a direction.

The park lists the operators on its reservation page and points to Sernatur's register of tourism services to check an agency. Book the nights in the order you will walk them, and keep each confirmation, so a missing night is visible before you pay for the rest.

W or O: which trek fits you

The park's recommendations page describes both. The W takes 3 to 5 days and lets you visit the Grey Glacier, the French Valley and Base Torres, and it requires a reservation. The O, the Macizo Paine circuit, takes 8 to 10 days and adds Serón, Coirón, Perros and the Paso to the same landmarks. Between the Grey and Paso camps, CONAF flags two suspension bridges higher than 20 meters for anyone who suffers from vertigo.

Choose the W if you have a week or less and want the headline sights on a route with refugio infrastructure. Choose the O only if you have the time, want the remote back side of the massif, and can fit your dates around the closure. Choose a day hike if you cannot confirm lodging, because CONAF says day hikes and the full day on the road need no lodging reservation. Who should not do the O: anyone with fewer than eight days to spare, anyone uneasy about the high suspension bridges, and anyone who cannot walk several days without mobile coverage, since CONAF says the interior trails have no phone or internet signal.

Seasonal rules

The park changes its rules with the seasons, and 2026 shows how much. The Pases Parques page said that to hike Base Torres and the W an accredited specialized guide was mandatory from 27 April to 15 September 2026, or while the winter conditions that justify it remain. The park's home page now says that from 16 September accredited guides are no longer required on Base Torres and the W. CONAF's winter regulation covers 1 May to 30 September each year, and the park still requires microcrampons and trekking poles where winter conditions persist.

Read that closure plainly: the earliest the O could reopen is 1 November, and the reopening is not promised. If your O dates start in the last weeks of October or the first weeks of November, do not book lodging that you cannot change until the park confirms the circuit is open.

The opening hours also differ by source. Pases Parques lists the park as open from 07:00 to 21:00 in the summer season, October to April, and from 08:00 to 18:30 in the winter season, May to September, with last entry at the closing time, subject to weather. The park's own fees page gives 8:00 to 19:00. Plan inside the narrower window and check the park's daily trail report for the status of trails, roads and services.

Inside the park

Registration does not end at the gate. CONAF says it is mandatory to register upon arrival at all ranger stations. At the Paso and Perros campsites, you must also register your departure, for your own safety. The trail closing times exist so that nobody is caught by darkness before the next campsite, and only the ranger in each sector can authorize walking outside them. The park's reference table lists closing times by section in summer, for example 18:30 for the section from Paine Grande to Italiano, 15:00 for Italiano to the British lookout, 16:00 for Grey to Paine Grande and 14:00 for Los Perros to Paso, and the rangers may restrict passage when the weather requires it.

The park bans music from speakers on the trails and cycling on the W and O trails, although bikes are allowed on vehicle roads and should not ride alone. Drones are prohibited for recreational use, and the park says offenders are expelled and reported to the civil aviation authority. Swimming is prohibited in all lakes, lagoons and rivers. Camping is allowed only in the designated areas, and cooking only with stoves that burn no plant material, in the areas set aside at each camp. Fire is the strictest rule: the park cites Law 20.653 and says breaking it can bring fines of up to 2,000,000 pesos or three years in prison, and the park publishes a separate regulation on fire and other heat sources. Litter fines can reach 200,000 pesos. Kayaks and inflatable boats need a disinfection certificate issued in Puerto Natales, valid 48 hours.

CONAF's safety advice is blunt: almost all fatal accidents happen off the authorized trails. Avoid walking alone, carry layers for rain, wind and snow, and do not cross a river if the water is above your knees. If you meet a puma, stay calm, do not run, and back away slowly while looking at it, standing upright and making yourself look larger. The park adds that the nearest medical center is in Puerto Natales. The recommendations page has the full list.

A booking plan for the W

Decide the direction and the number of nights first. The W can be walked in either direction, and the stops you choose determine which operator you book with for each night. Then book every night with Las Torres Patagonia or Vértice Patagonia, or through an agency on the Sernatur register, and keep each confirmation.

Once all nights are confirmed, buy the multi-day park pass on Pases Parques for the matching dates, at least 24 hours before you enter. Finally, arrange transport from Puerto Natales and, if your route uses it, the boat across Lake Pehoé. On the day, register at each ranger station you pass, and keep your confirmations and pass offline on your phone and on paper.

If a night will not book

Missing one night breaks a W itinerary, so decide the fallback before you start. The mandatory booking rule exempts day hikes, the road-based full day and the roadside Serrano and Pehoé campsites, so a trip built from Base Torres and the road viewpoints needs no lodging inside the park. You can also shift the whole trek by a day or two and rebuild the chain, or reverse the direction and see whether the missing stop sells in the other order.

For the wider trip, see the Torres del Paine guide and El Calafate across the border for the Perito Moreno Glacier. CONAF warns that winter conditions can hamper rescue operations and that the nearest medical center is in Puerto Natales, so check the travel insurance guides for trekking cover. You will be offline on the trail, which makes the connectivity guide most useful for the towns, and the transport guide helps with the long legs on either side.

Perguntas frequentes

Do I need a reservation to hike the W in Torres del Paine?

Yes. CONAF requires mandatory lodging reservations at the refugios and campsites with facilities inside the park for the W and the Macizo Paine circuit (O). Without them you cannot enter the mountain area. Day hikes such as Base Torres do not need one.

How much is the Torres del Paine entrance fee in 2026?

For foreign visitors aged 18 and over, CLP 32,400 for a day pass and CLP 48,500 for more than two days. Visitors aged 13 to 17 pay CLP 16,600 for a day and CLP 48,500 for more than two days. Children under 12 enter free. Chilean nationals pay lower rates.

Where do I buy Torres del Paine tickets?

On pasesparques.cl, the official sales portal for Chile's national parks, at least 24 hours before you enter. CONAF's park site links to it from its home page.

Who runs the refugios in Torres del Paine?

CONAF names two concessionaires for the refugios and campsites with facilities: Las Torres Patagonia and Vértice Patagonia. You book with them directly or through accredited companies and tour operators registered with Sernatur.

Is the O circuit open?

Not yet. The Pases Parques page for the park says the Paine Massif circuit, known as the O, stays closed until 31 October 2026 and that any reopening depends on an evaluation of weather and safety conditions at that time.

Do I need a guide for the W?

Not from 16 September 2026. The park's home page says accredited guides are no longer required on Base Torres and the W from that date, while microcrampons and trekking poles remain required where winter conditions persist.

Can I get a refund if I miss my entry time or change plans?

Not on the grounds the Pases Parques FAQ lists. It says refunds are granted only when the park is administratively closed under a resolution, and that no refund is given if you arrive after the last entry time.
