Palawan

Go to Palawan to choose between El Nido's limestone cliffs, Coron's wreck dives and the Puerto Princesa Underground River, then plan around the long distances between them.

Palawan is an island province in the western Philippines, between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea. Most travelers visit three places: El Nido, where limestone cliffs rise from clear lagoons; Coron, where Japanese ships sunk in the Second World War draw divers and freshwater lakes sit in the limestone hills; and the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, an underground river that runs to the sea and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The island suits travelers who want boats, snorkeling and scenery more than city sights. Plan for the drier months, roughly December to May. Each base has its own focus: El Nido is built around lagoon tours, Coron around dive boats and lakes, and Puerto Princesa is the city you pass through for the river. Because the places are far apart, count the transfers between them as travel days.

Palawan in five

  1. Book the Underground River aheadVisits to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River need a permit with a daily limit. Book through your hotel or an accredited operator.
  2. Pay the local environmental feesEl Nido and Coron charge fees for island-hopping tours and protected areas. Amounts change, so keep the receipt for your whole stay.
  3. Allow a day between El Nido and CoronThe ferry takes several hours and can be cancelled in rough seas. Do not book a flight the same day.Cebu next
  4. Choose your airport by basePuerto Princesa (PPS) is the main hub. El Nido has a small airport, and Coron uses Busuanga (USU).Manila gateway

Palawan FAQ

El Nido or Coron?

El Nido for lagoons and beaches, Coron for wreck diving and freshwater lakes. With a week, do both.

How do I get from Puerto Princesa to El Nido?

By van or bus in about 5–6 hours, or by a short flight to El Nido's airport.

When is the best time to visit Palawan?

January to April, when seas are calm and it is dry. From June to October the southwest monsoon can cancel boat trips.

Can you visit El Nido and Coron in one trip?

Yes, with six to eight days. Fly to one, take the ferry or a flight between them, and leave a spare day for weather before your flight home.

Is the Puerto Princesa Underground River worth it?

For a half-day trip, yes, if you book a permit slot ahead. It is a boat ride through a lit cave, so skip it if you are short on time and already have El Nido plans.
