Panay is the sixth-largest island in the Philippines, in the Western Visayas region, with four provinces: Aklan, Antique, Capiz and Iloilo. Most visitors arrive through Iloilo City, which has its own airport, or through Kalibo, the gateway to Boracay on the northwest coast. Iloilo City is the base for most trips, with the Jaro and Molo districts a short ride from the center.
Food is a main reason to come. La Paz batchoy, a pork noodle soup, comes from the La Paz district of Iloilo City. The island also has Spanish-era churches, including Miag-ao Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kalibo holds the Ati-Atihan festival each January. Plan three to five days for Iloilo and one or two day trips, and add more time if Boracay is on your route. The dry season, roughly November to May, suits most trips. July to October brings typhoon risk.

How many days do you need in Panay?
Three to five days cover Iloilo City, Miag-ao Church and a day trip to Guimaras. Add two or three nights for Boracay, since the transfer from Kalibo or Caticlan takes time each way.
Is Iloilo City worth visiting?
Yes, for the food, the old churches and the riverside Esplanade. It works best as a base for a few days, and it is the main gateway to Guimaras and Miag-ao.
When is the best time to visit Panay?
December to March, when it is mostly dry. Typhoons are most likely from July to October, and that season can cancel ferries and boats.
How do you get from Iloilo to Boracay?
Take a van from Iloilo to Caticlan, then a short boat to Boracay. Flying to Kalibo and taking a van from there is the other option. Check van and boat times before you book.
Do you need a car in Panay?
Not in Iloilo City, where jeepneys, tricycles and ride apps cover most trips. A car or driver helps for Miag-ao and the smaller towns, where transport runs less often.
Is Panay safe for tourists?
Most visitors stay in Iloilo City, Boracay and the main towns without trouble. Keep valuables out of sight on jeepneys and at night, and dial 911 in an emergency.
