Mindanao is the second-largest island in the Philippines, at the southern end of the country. Most trips center on three areas: the surf off Siargao, Camiguin with its hot springs and offshore sandbar, and Davao, a large city and a common base for climbing Mount Apo. Its areas feel very different. Davao is a busy city known for durian, while Siargao and Camiguin are small islands with a slower pace.

Mindanao suits surfers, hikers and food-focused travelers who don't mind domestic flights and ferries. Pick one or two areas instead of covering the whole island, and count the flights and ferries between them when you set your days. The drier months run roughly March to May, but weather varies by coast and island, so check conditions for each place you pick. Check current government travel advisories for the areas you plan to visit before you book.

Mindanao in five

  1. Book a flight into Davao, Siargao or CamiguinDavao International Airport is the airport for Davao city. Siargao (Sayak) and Camiguin have small airports, and many routes connect through Manila or Cebu. Check every leg before you buy, since island flights are fewer.Getting around
  2. Carry pesos for the islandsHotels in Davao take cards, but small shops and tricycles on the islands usually want cash. Withdraw enough pesos in Davao before you take a boat.Money and costs
  3. Get a Globe or Smart data SIMGlobe and Smart are the main carriers, and signal on the islands drops outside the towns. Load data in Davao or another city before you leave for an island.Phones and eSIM
  4. Book island boats through a known operatorBoat trips to Siargao's lagoons and Camiguin's White Island depend on the sea, so ask for a backup date. Agree the price and what lunch includes before you board.Tours and tickets
  5. Buy insurance that covers boats and evacuationMoving a patient from the islands to Manila or Cebu is costly. Check that your policy covers boat trips and motorbike rides.Travel insurance

    • Many nationalities enter visa-free for short stays, but the allowed length depends on your passport. Check the Bureau of Immigration before you book.Source
    • Declare foreign currency above the legal limit on the customs declaration form. Check the current threshold with the Bureau of Customs before you travel.

    Mindanao FAQ

    Is Mindanao safe for tourists?

Davao, Siargao and Camiguin are popular with visitors, but parts of the wider region have conflict and travel advisories. Check your government's current advice for each province before you book, and avoid any area it lists.

How many days do you need in Mindanao?

Mindanao is too large for one short trip, so pick one or two areas. Combining islands means connecting flights or ferries, so count the transfers between them.

How do you get from Davao to Siargao?

Fly to Siargao's Sayak Airport, often with a connection in Manila or Cebu. The overland route is a bus north to Surigao City and then a ferry to the island. Check schedules before you plan the connection.

When is the best time to visit Mindanao?

The dry months run roughly March to May. Siargao's surf peaks from about August to October, when crowds grow. Rain varies by island, so check the forecast for each stop.

Do you need a car in Mindanao?

Not in Davao city, where taxis and Grab rides cover most trips. On the islands, tricycles and motorbikes handle most local trips, and a rented motorbike suits the coastal roads.

    Is Camiguin worth visiting?

Yes if you want volcanoes, waterfalls and quieter beaches. Camiguin is small, but getting there by ferry takes time, so count the crossing into your days.
