Hua Hin is a beach town on the Gulf of Thailand, in the western part of the country. It is the largest city in Prachuap Khiri Khan province and houses the administrative center of Hua Hin district. The town has long been a seaside getaway for the Thai royal family, and a royal palace sits near the shore. Travelers come for the long sandy beach, the night market and a slower pace than the big resort towns. Maps and addresses may use either Hua Hin or Nong Kae, and signs and tickets show the Thai name หัวหิน.
Hua Hin suits couples, families and anyone who wants a beach break within easy reach of Bangkok. Most visitors reach it by train or road in about three to four hours. The cooler, drier months from November to February are the best time to go. Plan at least two or three nights to cover the beach, the town and a day trip along the coast.
Hua Hin in five
- Choose train for charm, van for speedThe train from Bangkok arrives at one of Thailand's oldest railway stations but is slower; a minivan or taxi is faster door to door. Check the State Railway timetable for the day.Central Thailand
- Pick a base by the night market or the beachThe town center has the night market, shops and the station; Khao Takiab to the south has a quieter beach and the monkey hill; Hin Lek Fai has vineyards and cafes. Decide before you book.
- Keep belongings away from the monkeysAt Khao Takiab the monkeys snatch bags, sunglasses and food. Do not feed them, keep valuables zipped away and be careful with phones.
- Use the beach for the morning, not middayThe Gulf coast is hot and shade is limited on the open beach. Horse rides and kitesurfing are part of the scene, so book sports through established operators and check conditions.
- Add a day trip south for caves and parksPranburi, Sam Roi Yot and Kaeng Krachan are an hour or more away by road. Phraya Nakhon Cave involves a hike, so go early and check the park's current hours and fees.Prachuap Khiri Khan

Read the guideHua Hin FAQ
Is Hua Hin worth visiting?
Yes for an easy beach weekend from Bangkok, with a night market, golf and a calmer mood than Pattaya. It is not a snorkeling island, so skip it if clear water is the goal.
How do you get from Bangkok to Hua Hin?
By train, minivan, bus or taxi, usually in three to four hours depending on traffic. The train is slower but scenic; check the State Railway timetable and book a seat in busy periods.
How many days do you need in Hua Hin?
Two days for the beach, the night market and a meal by the sea. Four days let you add a day trip to Pranburi, Sam Roi Yot or Kaeng Krachan.
Is Hua Hin better than Pattaya?
Hua Hin is calmer and more family-oriented, with a royal-resort history; Pattaya is busier, with nightlife and closer to Bangkok. Choose Hua Hin if you want a slower beach town.
When is the best time to visit Hua Hin?
November to February is the coolest and driest stretch. March to May is hot, and June to October has showers, though Hua Hin is often less wet than the Andaman coast.
