Ko Phi Phi is a pair of islands in Krabi Province, on Thailand's Andaman coast. Phi Phi Don is the larger island and holds the village, hotels, restaurants and ferry piers. It has no cars, so you walk or take a boat. Phi Phi Leh lies a short boat ride away and holds Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon between steep limestone cliffs. Boats run from Phuket and Krabi, and the crossing takes roughly one to two hours depending on the boat.
Go for snorkeling, beaches and a short beach break in Thailand. A day trip works if you have only one day in the area. Stay a night or two on Phi Phi Don if you want an early boat to Maya Bay. Maya Bay and the surrounding waters are in a national park, so park rules and entry fees apply. The cooler, drier months from November to April usually bring calmer seas. May to October is the rainy season, with rougher water and more rain. Plan at least two nights if you want a full day on the water without rushing the boat schedule.
Koh Phi Phi in five
- Stay a night to beat the day-tripper hoursSpeedboats from Phuket and Krabi flood Tonsai and the bays from late morning to mid-afternoon. A night on the island gives you empty beaches at dawn and dusk and a cheaper way to reach Maya Bay before the crowds.Day trip or overnight?
- Pick the base before the beachTonsai Village has the pier, restaurants and nightlife; Loh Dalum is a calm bay at walking distance; Long Beach and Laem Tong are quiet and reached by longtail or a trail. Wrong base means a lot of luggage hauling.Where to stay on Ko Phi Phi
- Expect Maya Bay to be a visit, not a swimBoats land at a back-side pier, you walk to the beach, and swimming in the bay itself has been restricted since the 2022 reopening to protect the reef. The bay also closes for part of the monsoon, so confirm it is open for your dates.
- Travel with luggage you can carryThere are no cars, and porters and handcarts move bags between the pier and Tonsai. Beyond Tonsai the trails are sandy and steep, so pack in a soft bag if you plan to sleep at Long Beach or Laem Tong.
- Landing in Phuket or Krabi first? Sort the arrival cardMost visitors reach Phi Phi through a Phuket or Krabi airport, so the Thailand Digital Arrival Card and the 30-day visa-free limit apply before you ever board a ferry.Thailand entry rules

Is Ko Phi Phi worth visiting?
Yes for scenery and snorkeling, less so for solitude. The cliffs and clear water are the draw, and the island is crowded between roughly 10am and 4pm. Stay one night, and see the bays at dawn or dusk.
How many days do you need on Ko Phi Phi?
Two nights is comfortable: one afternoon for the viewpoint, one morning boat for Maya Bay and one slow beach day. One night works if you only want the highlights, and a day trip is enough for Maya Bay and snorkeling.
Can you swim at Maya Bay?
No, swimming in the bay itself has been restricted since the reopening, and visitors walk the beach and snorkel from boats elsewhere. Rules change, so check the park authority and your boat operator before you go.
How do you get to Ko Phi Phi from Phuket?
By ferry from Rassada pier, usually about two hours, or by speedboat tour in about an hour. Sailings are fewer and can be cancelled in rough monsoon seas from about June to October, so leave a day of margin before flights.
Is Ko Phi Phi good in the rainy season?
It is quieter and cheaper, but seas are rough, ferries can be cancelled and some bars and restaurants close. Plan flexibly, and avoid tight connections between Phi Phi and a flight.
