Krabi is a province on Thailand's west coast in the south, where the Krabi River flows into Phang Nga Bay on the Andaman Sea. Krabi Town, the capital, lies about 650 km (400 mi) south of Bangkok. Most of the local economy depends on tourism. Visitors come for limestone cliffs, beaches and more than 80 smaller islands, including Ko Lanta and Phi Phi. Railay Beach, near Ao Nang, draws climbers from around the world, and nearby rocky islands are used for deep water soloing, reached by longtail boat.
Beaches, climbing, diving, snorkeling and kayaking are the main draws. Inland, Khao Phanom Bencha National Park has waterfalls, caves and trekking. The drier months for visiting the islands run from October through April. The rainy season lasts about ten months, from March to December, and heavy rain can last for days. Ao Nang and Railay suit beach and boat days, while Krabi Town puts you near the provincial capital's services. Set aside several days so you are not rushing between boat trips.
