Kurz gesagt

Stay in Jeju City for a short trip, because the airport and the island's bus hub are there. Choose Seogwipo for the south-coast waterfalls and a Hallasan start from the south, Seongsan for sunrise and Udo, and Hallim or Aewol for a slow west-coast stay with a car. Most visitors split a four-night trip between two bases.

How to choose a base on Jeju

Jeju is an island of roughly one volcano and one ring road, so where you sleep decides how much of the trip is spent driving. The Jeju-do travel guide covers the island as a whole, and the South Korea guide covers the rest of South Korea. The honest answer for most visitors is two bases rather than one, because a single address cannot sit near both the Hallasan trailheads and the east coast sunrise.

Start with how you move. If you plan to rent a car, the east and west coasts become practical, and the choice turns on scenery and price. If you plan to use buses and taxis, stay where the buses are, which means Jeju City or Seogwipo. A foreign driver needs an International Driving Permit alongside a home license, which the international driving permit guide explains. Next, weigh the length of stay. With two or three nights, one base in Jeju City is simplest. With four to six nights, split the stay so that you do not cross the island with luggage more than once.

Price bands below are rough guides for a double room per night: $ for a simple guesthouse, $$ for a mid-range hotel or pension, $$$ for a resort or villa. Rates swing with school holidays, the autumn season and long weekends, and no figures are quoted, so read the final total before you pay.

1. Jeju City and the airport

Best for
Short trips, early flights

Jeju City is the practical base. Jeju International Airport is in the city, the island's long-distance bus terminal is there, and the park page for Hallasan lists bus 181 from the airport and bus 281 from the Jeju bus terminal as the public ways to reach the Seongpanak trailhead. That makes it the safest base for the first night, the last night before a flight and any trip built around buses.

The city also has the widest range of rooms, from business hotels to guesthouses, and the most places to eat after dark. That matters on a trip where dinner in a rural area can mean a drive. The Visit Jeju site also lists the Jeju Information Call Center on 120 for tourism questions and complaints, which is easier to use from a city base.

The trade-off is scenery. Most of the sights visitors fly in for are on the coasts or on the volcano, so a city base turns every day into a transfer. It also gets busy around the airport on holiday weekends, when traffic into town slows.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you want the sea at your window or a sunrise start. The east coast or Seogwipo is a better fit.

Stay here for a short airport transfer, since the sights are on the coasts.

2. Seogwipo and the south coast

Best for
Waterfalls, coast walks
Transit
Bus 281 to Jeju City
To Hallasan
Bus 281 stops on the 5.16 road

Seogwipo is the southern counterpart to Jeju City: a smaller town with its own bus terminal and a cluster of sights on foot or a short ride away. According to Visit Jeju, Cheonjiyeon Falls is open from 09:00 to 22:00 with last admission at 21:20, so it can be seen at night, and Jeongbang Falls is open 09:00 to 17:50 with last admission at 17:30, and hours can change with sunset and weather. Jeongbang is described as the only coastal waterfall in Korea that falls directly into the sea. Read the Seogwipo travel guide for the town itself.

The base also helps for Hallasan. Bus 281 runs along the 5.16 road between the Jeju and Seogwipo bus terminals, with the first bus at 06:00 and the last at 22:00, according to the park page. That is not early enough for the 05:00 trail opening, but it makes a day hike workable with a taxi for the first leg. Details are in the Hallasan hike guide.

The limits are distance from the airport and from the east coast sunrise. Seogwipo has fewer big hotels than the city, and a car is useful for anything beyond the town.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you land late or leave early and want the airport close. Jeju City saves the transfer.

3. Seongsan and the east coast

Best for
Sunrise, Udo, lava tube
Transit
Car recommended
To Udo
Ferry 10 to 15 min
Price band
$–$$

The east coast is where Jeju's World Heritage volcanic sights cluster. Seongsan Ilchulbong opens as early as 04:30 in summer and 06:00 in winter, according to Visit Jeju, with the paid trail taking about 30 to 40 minutes to the summit. Sleeping nearby turns a predawn start from an ordeal into a short walk or drive. Seongsan Port, for the ferry to Udo, is in the same area, and Manjanggul lava tube is in the northeast. The full loop is in the Jeju east coast day.

Rooms here lean toward pensions, guesthouses and small hotels, and rates tend to be lower than in the city or on the south coast, though busy weekends push them up. Restaurants close earlier than in the city, so plan dinner before dark.

If you want to sleep on Udo itself, Visit Jeju says outside rental vehicles are restricted on the island from 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2029, with exceptions that include rental vehicles used by guests staying on Udo under the applicable conditions. Confirm the rule with the property before you ship a car across.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you plan to rely on buses. Services between sights on the east coast are slower, and a car makes the base work.

Choose the east coast when sunrise matters and you have a car.

4. Hallim and the west coast

Best for
Slow stays, beaches
Transit
Car recommended
To airport
Drive or taxi
Price band
$$–$$$

The west coast suits travelers who want a slow stay rather than a checklist. Hallim sits on the island's northwest side, facing the sea, and the coast is a choice for beach days and evenings away from the busier east and south. It is the base for guests who plan to drive and want fewer crowds after dark; no official hours or fees are quoted here because none were checked for this area.

The cost is convenience. Public transport is thinner here than on the south or in the city, so a car is close to a requirement, and the nearest big sights, such as Hallasan or Seongsan, are far enough that you would spend a day driving to reach them. Use this base for a last few nights after the island loop, not for the first.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you do not drive or you have only two or three nights. Jeju City or Seogwipo is easier.

A good pick for the last few nights after the island loop, with a car.

How many nights in each base

The number of nights decides whether a split stay is worth the packing. For two or three nights, stay in one place and treat the island as a set of day trips: Jeju City is the safe choice if you rely on buses and taxis, and the east coast is the better one if you have a car and care more about sunrise than dinner choices. Moving bases for a short trip burns half a day on luggage, check-out times and a cross-island ride.

For four nights, a split of two and two works well. A city night at each end protects the flights, and the middle two nights go to the coast that matches your plan, Seogwipo for waterfalls or Seongsan for the east coast loop. For five or six nights, three bases are possible but rarely worth it; a sensible shape is city, east coast and south coast, with the Hallasan day placed on the night before you move, when you already have a car or a taxi booked.

The transfer itself is not long. The Hallasan park page lists about 45 to 50 minutes on bus 281 between the Jeju and Seogwipo bus terminals, and a taxi or rental car is faster. The east coast is farther, and no bus times were verified for it, so allow extra time and check the schedule of any bus you plan to use.

Put the last night near the airport. Wind and fog can delay flights on an island, and a missed flight is easier to fix from the city, where rooms and rebooking desks are close, than from a west coast villa an hour away. If your flight leaves early, the city base saves a predawn drive.

If a Hallasan summit slot is part of the plan, treat it as the anchor and choose the base around it. The trail opens at 05:00 and the entrance closes at midday, so a late arrival from another base is risky. The Hallasan hike guide explains the cut-offs, and the same page shows why a car or taxi is the practical way to start on time. For a lighter plan, the Jeju-si guide covers what the airport city offers on its own.

Booking tips

Book earlier for Korean holiday weekends and the autumn season, when domestic visitors fill the island and flights from Seoul sell out. Choose rates that cancel free of charge, because typhoon season runs from June to November according to the UK government, and a storm can ground flights and close trails. Check whether breakfast, parking and luggage storage are included, since a rental car on a coastal base makes parking a practical question.

If you are arriving from abroad, remember that the island is domestic: you clear Korean entry formalities at your first airport, usually Incheon, before the flight to Jeju. The UK government says visa-free British visitors are exempt from K-ETA until 31 December 2026 and that an e-Arrival card can be submitted up to 72 hours before arrival; the K-ETA explained page covers the rule. Set up data before you land with the phone and data guide, and compare cover in the travel insurance guide, since the island's weather can disrupt both flights and hikes.

Häufige Fragen

Where is the best place to stay in Jeju for first-timers?

Jeju City suits a first, short trip: the airport is in the city, the main bus terminal is there, and buses 181 and 281 link it with the south coast and the Hallasan trailhead. With four nights or more, split between the city and Seogwipo or Seongsan.

Is it better to stay in Jeju City or Seogwipo?

Jeju City is better for a short stay, early flights and bus connections. Seogwipo is better if your days are the south coast, the waterfalls and a Hallasan start from the south, and you want a smaller town in the evening.

Do you need a car if you stay in Jeju?

A car is worth having for east and west coast bases, where buses are slower between sights. Foreign drivers need an International Driving Permit with a home license. The city and Seogwipo can work by bus and taxi for a short trip.

Where should you stay to see the Seongsan sunrise?

Stay in Seongsan or nearby on the east coast. The peak's hours open between 04:30 and 06:00 depending on the season, so sleeping close avoids a long predawn drive from the city.

Can you stay on Udo island?

Yes. Ferries run from Seongsan Port and Jongdal Port in 10 to 15 minutes, and the island has guest stays. Outside rental vehicles are restricted on Udo from 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2029, with exceptions for guests staying on the island under conditions, so check before you bring a car.
