Koh Kood, also called Ko Kut, is an island in the Gulf of Thailand, part of Trat Province in eastern Thailand. It is the largest of roughly a dozen islands in Ko Kut District, and its Thai name is เกาะกูด. Fishing, agriculture and tourism make up the local economy, and the island is still relatively remote and underdeveloped. Cambodia and Thailand disputed it in the mid-1960s, and Thailand kept control under the 1907 Siamese-French Border Treaty, which is still the legal basis for the island being Thai.

Trat Province was a trading hub on the route to Siam's capital during the Rattanakosin era (1782 to 1932). Before tourism, islanders mainly grew rubber, fruit and coconuts, and a local tourism industry began in the 1990s. The island suits travelers who want a slow pace on a lightly developed coast. Go in the drier months from January to March, and allow at least three nights.

Koh Kood FAQ

Is Koh Kood worth visiting?

Yes if you want a quiet island that is still underdeveloped. The economy centers on fishing, farming and a tourism industry that began in the 1990s, so expect simple bungalows and few shops.

Is Koh Kood part of Cambodia?

No. The island was disputed between Thailand and Cambodia in the mid-1960s, but Thailand kept control under the 1907 Siamese-French Border Treaty, which is still the legal basis for it being Thai.

How many days do you need on Koh Kood?

Plan at least three nights, since the boat ride takes part of the day at each end. Two nights leave little time to walk around or enjoy the quiet beaches.

When is the best time to visit Koh Kood?

January to March is the driest stretch. October and November bring rough seas, which can disrupt boat trips.

What is the history of Koh Kood?

Trat was a trading hub on the route to Siam's capital in the Rattanakosin era (1782 to 1932), and pirates gathered in the region and nearby islands at that time. Before tourism, islanders mainly grew rubber, fruit and coconuts.
