Placencia is a small village in Belize’s Stann Creek District, at the southern tip of a roughly 18-mile peninsula. Its eastern side has a long white-sand beach, with mangroves in some areas. The western side faces a calm, narrow bay suited to water activities. Placencia Airport serves the village. Its main street is a sidewalk lined with gift shops, beach bars, hotels and cabanas. North along the peninsula are Seine Bight, a Garifuna village, and Maya Beach, a small community with resorts, shops, bars and an art gallery.
Kayaking, snorkeling, diving and saltwater fishing are among the activities here. From Placencia Lagoon, you can paddle among mangroves and look for manatees, dolphins and birds. Whale shark watching takes place around full moons from April to July. At Gladden Spit, cubera snappers usually spawn from March to September, drawing predators and whale sharks around the full moon. Inland day trips include Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Maya ruins in the Toledo District. Set aside several days for the peninsula and an inland trip. Easter Week is a busy time in Placencia; choose another period if you want to avoid that peak.

How do you get to Placencia from Belize City?
Most visitors fly: daily Tropic Air flights serve Placencia, and Maya Island Air lists about 40 minutes in the air. The alternative is the Southern Highway by road; read the road warnings in the Southern Belize guide first.
Is Placencia or Hopkins better?
Placencia suits beach time, restaurants and reef trips; Hopkins suits Garifuna culture and quick access to Cockscomb and waterfall hikes. Choose by what fills your days, or split the nights.
Is Placencia worth visiting?
Yes, if you want a beach base in the south with reef trips offshore and jungle inland. Skip it if your time is under four days and you want the cayes, since Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye sit nearer Belize City.
When is the best time to visit Placencia?
February to May is the drier stretch in the Stann Creek hills, per the Cockscomb sanctuary. Storm season starts in June, so book flexible rates and check the forecast for the weeks you travel.
Does sargassum affect Placencia?
It can, on some beaches in some weeks. Check the tourism board sargassum page and the weather service forecasts before a beach-only week; reef trips run offshore and are less affected.
