Cyprus is an island in the eastern Mediterranean, south of Turkey. It is an EU member but sits outside the Schengen area, so your passport is checked on arrival and departure. The island has been divided since 1974. The Republic of Cyprus controls the south, Turkish Cypriot authorities run the north, and Nicosia, the capital, is split by the Green Line. You can cross only at designated points, where you show your passport.
Most trips center on three areas: the mosaics of the Paphos Archaeological Park on the west coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the Troodos Mountains, with villages and Byzantine painted churches; and the beaches around Limassol and the coast near Petra tou Romiou. Spring and autumn suit walking and sightseeing. Summer is hot and dry, which suits sea swimming. A week covers one part of the island well. Two weeks lets you split the south coast from the mountains. Traffic drives on the left.
Five things to know before Cyprus
- Check the entry rule for your passport
The UK, Canadian and Australian governments say no visa is needed for up to 90 days, and Cyprus lists US passports as visa-exempt. EU citizens can enter with a photo ID card. Schengen days are counted separately. Visa checker
- Arrive through the south, not through Ercan
UK advice says entering the Republic of Cyprus through the north, such as via Ercan Airport, is treated as illegal entry. You could be fined, refused entry or exit, or stopped from crossing back, so fly into Larnaca or Paphos.
- Cross the Green Line only at official points
Only pedestrians can use Ledra Palace and Ledra Street in Nicosia. UK advice says hire cars from the south often have no insurance cover in the north, and some crossings sell the cover. Time in the north counts toward your 90 days.
- Pick Limassol or Paphos as the first base
Limassol is the larger seaside city with Kourion and the wine villages within reach. Paphos is quieter and built around its mosaics and harbor. The comparison page sets out who should choose which. Limassol or Paphos
- Drive on the left and never hand over your passport
Traffic keeps to the left, and UK advice calls driving standards poor. It also says rental firms that ask for your passport as a deposit are acting illegally, and moped hire often carries only third-party cover. Car hire cover abroad

Cyprus FAQ
Is Cyprus in Schengen?
No. Cyprus is in the EU but outside Schengen, and UK advice says the EES does not apply there. Days spent in Cyprus do not count toward your Schengen 90, and Schengen days do not count toward Cyprus.
Do I need a visa for Cyprus?
UK, Canadian and Australian governments say a tourist visa is not needed for up to 90 days. Cyprus lists US passports as visa-exempt and lets EU citizens in with a photo ID card. Check your passport in the visa checker.
Can I visit Northern Cyprus from the south?
Yes, through the official crossing points, with your passport. Ledra Palace and Ledra Street are pedestrian only. Hire cars from the south often lack insurance for the north, and time in the north counts toward your 90 days.
Which side of the road do they drive on in Cyprus?
The left, as in the UK. UK advice says a UK photocard license is valid, and that driving standards are poor.
Should I base myself in Limassol or Paphos?
Limassol suits a livelier city stay with day trips to Kourion and the wine villages. Paphos suits mosaics, a quieter harbor and Aphrodite's coast. The comparison page sets out who should pick which.
