Larnaca is a port city on the southeast coast of Cyprus, a short drive from Larnaca International Airport, which makes it an easy first or last stop on the island. The town has been settled for thousands of years. Kition, an ancient city that was active in the Bronze Age, lies within the modern town, and the old quarter has the Church of Saint Lazarus.

Daily life centers on the Phinikoudes promenade, a palm-lined seafront with cafes and beaches, and Larnaca Fort stands on the water nearby. Beside the Salt Lake, the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque sits on the shore, and flamingos feed on the lake in winter. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months for walking, and summer is hot but suits a beach stay. Two or three days covers the town, which suits travelers who want a relaxed seaside base with history.

  2. Rent a car for the wider islandIntercity buses connect Larnaca with Nicosia and Limassol, but the Troodos villages and beaches off the main roads need a car. Traffic drives on the left.Getting around
  3. Keep hire cars out of the northRental car insurance from the Republic of Cyprus usually does not cover the northern part of the island, so do not drive one across the Green Line.
  4. Walk the seafront at PhinikoudesThe Phinikoudes promenade is the town's main beach walk, and the cafes fill up around sunset.
  5. Visit the Salt Lake in winterFlamingos gather on the lake in winter, so the shore walk and Hala Sultan Tekke are best then.
