Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus, an island in the eastern Mediterranean. It is the last divided capital in Europe. The Green Line, a buffer zone, runs through the city and separates the Greek Cypriot south from the Turkish Cypriot north. Visitors can cross between the two sides on foot at checkpoints, the best known being on Ledra Street.

The walled old city, built by the Venetians in the late 1500s, is the easiest place to start. Its streets also hold Ottoman-era buildings, including the Büyük Han caravanserai and the Selimiye Mosque, which was a Gothic cathedral before. The Cyprus Museum covers the island's history from prehistoric times. Plan two or three days for the old town, the museums and one crossing, with day trips to the coast or the Troodos mountains. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, since summer heat is strong.

  3. Rent a car and drive on the leftCyprus drives on the left, and hill roads toward Troodos are narrow and winding. A car is the easiest way to reach the villages and the mountains.Getting around
  4. Carry euros and Turkish lira for the northShops and cafes on the north side mainly use Turkish lira, and many also take euros. Carry a little of each for the crossing.
  5. Arrange the transfer from Larnaca airportLarnaca airport is roughly 45 minutes from Nicosia by road. A taxi or a pre-booked transfer is the simplest way in after a late landing.

    Nicosia FAQ

    Is Nicosia worth visiting?

Yes, for a divided capital with a walkable old town, Venetian walls and a border you can cross on foot. It is not a beach stop, so pair it with the coast or the hills for a longer trip.

Can you cross from Nicosia to the north?

Yes, on foot at the Ledra Street crossing, with your passport or ID. The north is recognised only by Turkey, so check the rules for your nationality before you cross, and keep some Turkish lira for the other side.

How do you get from Larnaca airport to Nicosia?

By taxi or a pre-booked transfer, in about 45 minutes by road. A rental car gives you the most freedom if you plan to drive on to Troodos or the coast.

How many days do you need in Nicosia?

Two days cover the old town, the walls, the museums and one crossing to the north. One day works if you only want Ledra Street and the crossing, and a third day leaves time for a side trip.

When is the best time to visit Nicosia?

Spring and autumn, roughly March to May and October, bring mild days. Summer is very hot and dry, and winter is cool with rain, though the city is open all year.

    Is Nicosia or Limassol better?

Nicosia suits history, museums and the crossing to the north. Limassol suits beaches and seafront restaurants, and it is about an hour away by road.
