Plovdiv is Bulgaria's second-largest city, in the south of the country on the Maritsa River. Its best-known sight is the Roman theatre, built in the 2nd century AD and still used for concerts and performances in the warmer months. Start there, since most other sights are a short walk uphill or along the streets around it.

The Old Town climbs several hills along cobbled lanes lined with houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period, many now used as guesthouses, cafes and small museums. Wear comfortable shoes. Kapana, a short walk away, is the creative district, with workshops, galleries and bars in former craft buildings. Two days covers both at a relaxed pace. A day trip from Sofia by train works if you only want the highlights. Spring and autumn suit walking the hills best; summer is hot.

  1. Start at the Ancient Theatre when it opensThe institute opens the theatre every day, with a short lunch break; the hours are in the checked rules below. Go first, before tour groups and the midday heat.Plovdiv in 2 days
  2. Count your paid stops before the combined ticketThe institute's combined ticket covers up to five sites but not the two basilicas, so tally what you will enter first; it pays off from four paid stops. Prices are in the checked rules below.Plovdiv in 2 days
  3. Walk the Roman Stadium for freeThe institute lists the Sphendone of the Roman Stadium as a free visit, so the curve of seats on Rome Stadium Square costs nothing. Only the 3D cinema hall there carries a ticket.
  4. Stay a night if the trip is longer than a lunchDirect trains from Sofia take about three hours, so a same-day return spends roughly six hours on the train. A night adds Kapana in the evening and the Old Town after the daytime crowds.Where to stay in Plovdiv
  5. Check the day's BDZ timetable before you commitBDZ lists its fares as dynamic and warns that repair works can change schedules. The day-trip guide shows the 3 October 2026 times as a dated example; look up your own date and keep a bus as backup.Day trip or overnight

Plovdiv FAQ

Is Plovdiv worth visiting?

Yes, mainly for the Roman Ancient Theatre and Stadium, the hilltop Old Town and the Kapana district. The city's own tourism site calls it a European Capital of Culture in 2019 and a wine destination, but the draw is walking, not a long checklist.

Can you visit Plovdiv as a day trip from Sofia?

Yes. Direct trains take about three hours each way, and BDZ's page for 3 October 2026 showed a 09:14 arrival and a 19:29 return, about ten hours in the city. One night is a better fit; see the day trip guide.

How many days do you need in Plovdiv?

Two days cover the Roman sites, the Old Town museums, Kapana and one hill viewpoint without rushing. One day is workable if you skip the paid museums and focus on the theatre, the stadium and Kapana.

Where should you stay in Plovdiv?

The Old Town for atmosphere and early theatre access, Kapana for restaurants and bars, the Main Street area for transport and shops. All three are close enough that the choice is about noise and views.

What is Kapana?

Kapana, meaning The Trap, is a grid of lanes beside the Main Pedestrian Street filled with workshops, cafes and bars. The city tourism site lists it among Plovdiv's top sights, and it is liveliest in the evening.
