Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is a short, easy float in some of the saltiest water on Earth, with the Baptism Site and Wadi Mujib within reach.

The Dead Sea lies on the border of Jordan, Israel and the West Bank, at the lowest point of dry land on Earth, more than 400 m below sea level. Its water is about 34% salt, so you float on your back with little effort. From Amman, the Jordanian shore is about an hour's drive away.

A float suits a short, easy stop on a wider Jordan trip, or a rest day after hiking, and a single day or one night is enough for most visitors. On the Jordanian side, the Baptism Site, linked to the baptism of Jesus, lies to the north, and Wadi Mujib, a canyon with a stream you can walk, lies to the south. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months, since summer heat is intense. Rinse off after your swim, because the salt dries on skin and can sting the eyes.

Dead Sea in five

  1. Float, do not swimKeep your face out of the water and do not splash. Salt in the eyes stings badly; rinse at the shore showers.
  2. Do not shave the day beforeThe salt stings on small cuts. Cover any scrapes before going in.
  3. Use a resort or public beachMost access is through resort day passes or the public Amman Beach, which have showers and shade.
  4. Visit the Baptism SiteBethany Beyond the Jordan sits near the northern shore. Entry is 12 JD on the official fee list, and the Jordan Pass sells it as an optional add-on rather than including it.Jordan entrance fees

Dead Sea FAQ

Can you swim in the Dead Sea?

You float rather than swim. Stay on your back, keep your face dry and limit sessions to short dips.

Can I visit the Dead Sea as a day trip from Amman?

Yes. It is about an hour by car, and resorts sell day passes with pools, showers and beach access.

When is the best time to visit the Dead Sea?

November to March, when highs are in the 20s °C. Summer is very hot at this altitude below sea level.

Is it safe to float in the Dead Sea?

For most people, yes, if you stay on your back, keep your face and eyes dry and take short dips. Skip it with open cuts or fresh shaving, and ask a doctor first if you have a heart, blood pressure or skin condition.

Can I combine the Baptism Site and the Dead Sea in one day?

Yes. They are close, so many visitors see Bethany Beyond the Jordan in the morning, float at a resort or the public beach at midday and drive back to Amman by evening. Leave time in summer for the heat.
