Agafay is a rocky plateau in Morocco, about half an hour from Marrakech. Its dry hills look desert-like, but they are not the broad sand dunes found in southern Morocco. The short drive makes Agafay a practical option if you want to leave the city for a few hours without traveling far. It is a different kind of trip from a visit to the dunes near Merzouga.
Plan a half-day outing for a sunset visit or an activity such as a quad or camel ride. An overnight camp stay gives you more time in the area. Spring and fall are comfortable seasons for a visit; summer heat can make outdoor activities less appealing. Choose Agafay for a nearby change of scenery, not for a full-scale sand-dune experience. If seeing large dunes is your priority, plan a trip to Merzouga instead.
Agafay Desert in five
- Treat Agafay as a half day or one nightThe tourist board puts it about thirty minutes from Marrakech, so you can sleep in a camp and be back for breakfast. Dunes it is not: the tourist board itself describes rocky dunes and open stony ground.
- Decide if you want the real Sahara insteadMerzouga's big dunes sit far away. The tourist board's desert route runs about 3 hr 47 min from Marrakech to the Ouarzazate area, then about 4 hr 20 min more, so Agafay is the short-time option.Draa Valley
- Vet quad, buggy and camel operatorsAdventure providers may not meet UK standards and quad accidents are frequent in resort areas. Wear a helmet, ask what the safety briefing includes and check your policy.Insurance
- Pack for a cold night after a hot dayOpen ground loses heat fast after sunset, and camps vary from tents to built rooms. Bring a warm layer even in warm months and ask whether the camp has heating.
- Pick a camp with transport and a fixed priceMany camps include a pickup from Marrakech. Confirm the pickup point, what dinner and breakfast include and whether activities are extra before you pay.Tours and tickets

Is the Agafay a real desert?
It is a stony semi-desert plateau with rocky ridges rather than the high sand dunes of the Sahara. The tourist board itself calls it rocky dunes. It is a good short alternative, not a replacement for Merzouga.
How far is the Agafay from Marrakech?
About thirty minutes by road according to the Moroccan tourist board, which is why camps offer both day trips and one-night stays with a Marrakech pickup.
Should you stay overnight in the Agafay?
One night is worth it if you want the sunset and a quiet sky, since the day-trip version is mostly a sunset activity. Skip the overnight if you are short of time or hate cold nights.
Are quad bikes safe in the Agafay?
They carry real risk. The UK government says quad accidents involving British nationals are frequent in resort areas, so wear a helmet, ask about the briefing and check your insurance covers the activity.
When is the best time to visit the Agafay?
March to May and October to November, when days are warm rather than hot. July and August afternoons are very hot, and winter nights can be cold.
