Aït Benhaddou is a fortified village, or ksar, in Morocco’s Ounila Valley, on the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh. The village rises on a hillside beside the Ounila River, enclosed by a defensive wall with corner towers and a gate. The site has been fortified since the 11th century, though its current buildings are not thought to predate the 17th century. UNESCO made it a World Heritage Site in 1987, recognizing its earthen architecture. The ksar’s houses are built from rammed earth, adobe, clay bricks and wood, materials that need regular care because rain erodes them.
Inside the walls are a public square, a mosque, several kasbahs and a Jewish cemetery. A ruined fortified granary sits at the top of the hill. A pedestrian bridge, completed in 2011, links the ksar to the modern village across the river; only a few families still live in the old village. The September 2023 earthquake damaged the site, causing cracks and partial collapses, and an early assessment warned of further collapses. Aït Benhaddou has also appeared in parts of Game of Thrones and Outer Banks. The nearby Tizi n’Tichka pass crosses the Atlas Mountains between Marrakesh and the Dra’a Valley.
Ait Ben Haddou in five
- Know what you are walking intoUNESCO describes a group of earthen buildings surrounded by high walls and corner towers, a traditional pre-Saharan habitat. Expect narrow stepped lanes, sun-baked walls and a climb to the top for the view.
- Stay one night if the light mattersDay-trip buses arrive in the middle of the day, when the ksar is harshest and busiest. A guesthouse in the village or near Ouarzazate gives you early and late light on the walls.Where to stay
- Add Ouarzazate for the film angleThe tourist board says directors including David Lean and Ridley Scott chose this region, and calls Ait Ben Haddou an outstanding set for several films. Ouarzazate's cinema museum is on its list of popular stops.
- Budget for the Marrakech road, not only the ksarThe tourist board's route from Marrakech to the Ouarzazate area is about 194 km and 3 hr 45 min, over the High Atlas pass. A day trip from Marrakech is a very long day, so most travelers combine it with a night or two further on.High Atlas
- Carry small cash and agree prices firstCafes, craft shops and guides around the ksar work in cash. Agree any guide's fee and the length of the walk before you start, and keep to the UK government's advice on pickpockets and scams in tourist areas.

Is Ait Ben Haddou worth visiting?
Yes, if you are already driving between Marrakech and the desert. UNESCO lists it as an example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture, and the setting looks like a film set because it has served as one.
How long do you need at Ait Ben Haddou?
Two to three hours cover the ksar and the climb to the top. Add a night if you want sunrise or sunset light and fewer tour groups.
Can you visit Ait Ben Haddou as a day trip from Marrakech?
It is possible but long: about 194 km each way to the Ouarzazate area on the tourist board's figures, over a mountain pass. Most travelers prefer to make it a stop on a multi-day desert route.
What is the best time to visit Ait Ben Haddou?
March to May and October to November, when days are warm rather than extreme. July and August can be very hot, and winter nights are cold.
Is Ait Ben Haddou the same as Ouarzazate?
No. Ouarzazate is the nearby town with the airport and hotels. Ait Ben Haddou is the ksar, in the same province, which most visitors reach by road from Ouarzazate or from Marrakech.
