Skoura is a town in Ouarzazate Province, in Morocco’s Drâa-Tafilalet region. The modern town sits along the main road from Ouarzazate, at the eastern edge of a historic oasis and palmeraie, or palm grove. Date palms grow alongside other fruit trees, vegetables and cereals. The oasis contains rammed-earth kasbahs, fortified family mansions, and ksour, fortified villages. Kasbah Amridil is the best known. Its ksar dates to the 17th century, and a tall kasbah was added in the late 19th century.
Streams from the central High Atlas mountains feed the oasis, but many rivers run dry outside spring. Khettaras, underground canals, bring water from the mountain foothills to reservoirs. Dams divert surface water, and seguias carry water from reservoirs to fields; landowners took turns watering their crops. Other named kasbahs include Aït Ben Moro, Mohamed Ben Hamadi, Ait Abou and Si Abd El Kebir. Some are crumbling, while others have been restored or put to new uses.
Skoura in five
- Walk the palm grove instead of only driving throughThe tourist board describes Skoura as a huge palm grove with apple, almond, walnut, pomegranate and fig trees. A slow walk among them is the reason to stop, ideally in the cool morning.
- Pick one or two kasbahs, not all of themThe tourist board names the Amerhidil kasbah as the most famous, with Dar Ait Hammou, Tighermt n Oumghar in Toundout, Dar Ait Souss and Dar Bel Ait El Hussein among the many. Ask locally which are open and what any entry costs.
- Stay a night to get the evening lightMost coaches and tours drive past in the afternoon heat. A night in a guesthouse in the grove gives you early and late light on the walls and a quiet evening.Where to stay
- Plan the road in daylightThe UK government says poor lighting makes night driving dangerous and that mountain and secondary roads can be especially hazardous in bad weather. Arrive before dusk, especially after crossing the High Atlas.Ait Ben Haddou
- Keep the Dades Valley for the next daySkoura sits at the western end of the kasbah road. A night here makes the Dades Valley and the gorges a morning drive rather than the end of a long day.Dadès Valley

Is Skoura worth a stop?
Yes if you like walking rather than ticking sights. The oasis and its kasbahs are the draw, and a night here breaks the long drive between Marrakech and the Dades Valley without a big detour.
Where is Skoura?
East of Ouarzazate on the road toward Kelaat M'Gouna and the Dades Valley. The tourist board calls it the first city east of Ouarzazate, so it is the first stop on the kasbah road.
How long do you need in Skoura?
Two to three hours cover a grove walk and one kasbah. A night adds the evening light and a quiet breakfast before you drive on, which is the better plan if you are not in a hurry.
Can you visit Skoura on a day trip from Marrakech?
It is a very long day: the tourist board puts Marrakech to the Ouarzazate area at about 194 km and 3 hr 45 min, and Skoura lies beyond it. Most travelers fit it into a multi-day southern loop.
When is the best time to visit Skoura?
March to May and October to November, when days are warm and the grove is green. July and August are extremely hot, and winter nights can be cold, so pick a guesthouse with heating if you come then.
