Taroudant is a small market town in Morocco’s Sous region, east of Agadir and south of Marrakesh, on the road to Ouarzazate. Travelers come to see its medina, a national cultural heritage monument, and the city walls, whose bastions and nine gates remain in use. Moroccan news media date the walls’ current layout to the Saadi period in the 16th century.

Assarag and Talmoklate are the town’s two main squares, each with a souk nearby. A weekly souk is held outside the walls, near the future university district. These markets and the old town are the main sights for a visit focused on Taroudant. Summer heat is extreme: a maximum temperature of 48.0 °C was recorded on August 11, 2023. Choose cooler months if you plan to spend time walking outdoors. The medina, walls and markets give a visit its focus; the input does not establish prices, opening hours or distances between these sights.

Taroudant in five

  1. Walk or ride the ramparts at the end of the dayThe tourist board gives the walls as 6 km long with 130 towers and elaborate gates. Late light turns the ochre stone golden, so time the circuit for the last hours before sunset.
  2. Shop the Amazigh souk, then the leather quarterThe tourist board names the Amazigh souk for crockery, carpets and lamps, and tanners working hides by hand. Agree prices first and compare a few stalls before you buy.
  3. Visit an argan cooperative outside the wallsThe tourist board points visitors to cooperatives and private producers outside the ramparts where nuts are shelled and pressed. Ask to see the process, and check the label before you pay for oil.Agadir
  4. Decide between a day trip and a nightThe tourist board puts Taroudant about 83 km and 1 hr 26 min from Agadir, and 276 km and 3 hr 13 min from Marrakech. From Agadir a day is enough, but a night gives you the quiet evening after day-trippers leave.
  5. Use Taroudant as a trekking base only with a guideThe tourist board calls it a starting point for treks in the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas. The UK government advises researching trails and hiring a professional guide for Atlas hikes.Insurance

Taroudant FAQ

Is Taroudant worth visiting?

Yes if you want a walled Moroccan town without Marrakech crowds. The ramparts, the souks and the argan cooperatives fill a day, and the pace is slower. If you only have time for one southern town, it is a good counterpart to Agadir's beach.

Is Taroudant like Marrakech?

The tourist board calls it the little Marrakech, but it has its own history as a Saadian capital. It is smaller, calmer and less touristed, with fewer monuments and a more local souk.

How do you get from Agadir to Taroudant?

By road, about 83 km and 1 hr 25 min according to the tourist board. This guide has no verified coach or shared taxi timetable, so ask your hotel or the Agadir station, or book a driver for the day.

How long do you need in Taroudant?

Four to six hours cover the ramparts, the souks and a cooperative visit. Stay a night if you want an evening walk along the walls and an early start for a trek or a drive into the foothills.

When is the best time to visit Taroudant?

Late winter and spring, plus November, when days are warm and not harsh. July and August are very hot inland, so keep to early mornings and the shade of the walls if you come then.
