Agadir is a major Moroccan city on the Atlantic coast, near the foot of the Atlas Mountains and just north of where the Souss River reaches the sea. Its main draw is a beach stretching for more than 10 km, with seafront promenades and swimming possible year-round. The Kasbah of Agadir Oufla, built in 1572, stands above the bay. Souk El Had is a large walled market with sections for vegetables, meat, spices, clothing, furniture and crafts. Agadir is also a center of Amazigh culture, and Tachelhit is spoken by about 53.7% of the population.

The city suits a beach-focused stay with time for the market, the kasbah and the fishing-port area, where small restaurants serve near the port avenue. For surfing, look north toward Taghazout, where surf spots and smaller beaches line the coast. Agadir has warm summers and mild winters; daytime temperatures usually stay in the 20s °C, and January highs are around 21 °C. Summer haze is common, and hot Chergui winds can push temperatures above 40 °C for two to five days at a time. Rain falls almost only in winter, so a winter visit may be dry or wet.

Agadir in five

  1. Pick the beach strip or the town before you bookThe tourist board cites a seafront about 10 km long, so where you sleep decides how far you walk to the sand, restaurants and souk. Compare the bases before you pay for anything.Where to stay in Agadir
  2. Plan for sun, but pack a layerThe tourist board claims about 300 sunny days a year with a climate softened by trade winds. That makes Agadir a winter-sun stop as well as a summer one, but evenings and breezy days feel cooler than the daytime highs.
  3. Go to Souk El Had with a list and a time limitThe tourist board counts more than 6,000 shops. Bargain, check what you are handed before you leave the stall, and remember the UK government warns of inferior goods being swapped in.Things to do in Agadir
  4. Use the red city taxis and fix the fareAgadir's petit taxis are red. Ask for the meter or settle the price before you get in, which also applies to the airport run to the city.
  5. Vet quad, boat and surf operatorsAdventure providers may not meet UK safety standards, and quad accidents are frequent in resort areas. Check your policy covers the activity and wear a helmet.Insurance

Agadir FAQ

How many days do you need in Agadir?

Three to four days cover the beach, the Souk El Had and one trip inland. Beach-focused travelers can stay a week, but sightseers run out of city fast and are better pairing Agadir with Marrakech or Essaouira.

Is Agadir worth visiting?

Yes if you want a beach stay in Morocco with reliable sun. It is a modern resort city rather than a medina town, so skip it if old-city atmosphere is your main goal.

How do you get from Marrakech to Agadir?

ONCF trains do not serve Agadir, according to the tourist board, so travelers use coaches, including Supratours from the ONCF group, shared taxis, a car or a flight. The road is about 250 km, roughly 3 hours.

Is the sea safe for swimming in Agadir?

Often, but many Moroccan beaches have limited lifeguard cover and strong currents or sudden waves can occur. Swim where others do, follow any flags and avoid isolated stretches.

Is Agadir or Taghazout better for a first stay?

Agadir for restaurants, shopping and an easy airport run; Taghazout for surf and a quieter village feel. A common split is a few nights in each.
