Dakhla is a city on the narrow Río de Oro Peninsula, about 550 km south of Laayoune on the Atlantic coast of Western Sahara. Morocco has administered the city since 1979, but most UN member states do not recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the area. Spain founded it as Villa Cisneros in 1884. Spanish colonial buildings include a military fortress and a modern Catholic church. Fishing and tourism are major local activities, and hand-farmed oysters are sold in Dakhla and to restaurants in Marrakesh and Casablanca.

Kitesurfing, windsurfing and surf casting are practiced around the city. Dakhla Bay and Cintra Bay are wintering grounds for birds, including greater flamingos, pelicans and oystercatchers. Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic humpback dolphins are regularly seen in Dakhla Bay. The desert climate is mild: average temperatures are about 18.4 °C in January and 23.2 °C in September, and annual rainfall averages about 30.8 mm. The Asmaa natural hot spring is 36 km from Dakhla; its thermal water is about 38 °C.

Dakhla in five

  1. Read the Western Sahara travel advice firstThe UK government advises against all travel to parts of Western Sahara, including areas near and east or south of the Berm, and travel against advice can void insurance. Check its map before you plan any excursion.UK travel advice
  2. Plan the journey: fly or accept a very long roadThe tourist board puts Dakhla about 1,168 km and nearly 16 hours by road from Agadir. Supratours lists an Agadir to Dakhla coach, but most visitors fly in.Agadir
  3. Choose a lagoon or a town baseThe tourist board names PK25 for calm swimming and Foum El Bouir for a livelier scene, and Pointe de Dragon for waves. Most kite and wind camps sit on the lagoon, away from the town.
  4. Book a school or operator that handles the logisticsThe UK government says organised groups are generally permitted while independent travelers could be turned back at the border. A camp or school that arranges transfers reduces that risk. Keep your passport with you.
  5. Book only a vetted water-sports schoolAdventure providers may not meet UK safety standards. Ask about instructors, gear and rescue cover, and check that your insurance covers kiting, windsurfing or quad biking.Insurance
