Taghazout is a small Berber fishing village on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, about 19 km north of Agadir. Fishing and argan oil production remain part of the local economy alongside tourism. The village sits at the western foothills of the High Atlas, with the ocean to the west and mountains inland. Several beaches are nearby. Anchor Point, about 3 km north of the village, is a long right-hand point break where waves can run about 2 km. There are surf spots for beginners and advanced surfers around Taghazout.

Surf conditions are best from September to April, especially for advanced surfers. Moroccan Atlantic waters reach up to 21 degrees. Taghazout is a quieter alternative to busier destinations such as Agadir and Marrakech, suited to travelers looking for a calm beach stay. Activities include yoga, paddle boarding, kayaking and camel rides on the beach. Day trips can take you to Paradise Valley or argan oil factories. Moroccan Arabic is the main spoken language; French, English and Tachelhit are also spoken.

Taghazout in five

  1. Match the break to your level before you bookThe tourist board says Taghazout's waves suit surfers of all levels, and names Killer Point and Anchor Point among the spots for the most experienced. Beginners should ask a school which beach it uses that day.
  2. Book a school with safety kit and rescue coverThe UK government warns that adventure providers may not meet UK safety standards and that many Moroccan beaches have limited or no lifeguard cover. Ask about instructors, boards, insurance and currents.Insurance
  3. Decide between Taghazout and Agadir as a baseAgadir has the airport, the hotels and the calm bay, while Taghazout is smaller and surf-led. Choose by whether you want evening choice and city logistics or a village rhythm.Agadir
  4. Add Souss-Massa or Taroudant on a non-surf dayThe tourist board lists the Souss-Massa National Park with birdlife and cave dwellings at Tifnit, and Taroudant's walls inland. Both fit a day from a base on this coast.Souss-Massa National Park
  5. Skip quad bikes unless the operator is vettedThe UK government notes that quad bike accidents involving British nationals frequently occur in resort areas, and advises a crash helmet at all times. Check that your insurance covers it.
