Tangier is a city in northwestern Morocco, on the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts near the Strait of Gibraltar. The Phoenician colony later became the Roman port of Tingis. From 1923, France, Spain and the United Kingdom administered Tangier as an international zone; Morocco reintegrated the city in 1956. Today, the old town’s stone ramparts enclose the Kasbah and Medina. Visit Petit Socco in the lower medina, then see the Kasbah Palace, now home to the Museum of Mediterranean Cultures. The Tangier American Legation Museum and the former British Consulate, now the Museum of Contemporary Art, add other stops within the city.

Tangier works as a city break or a stop on a northern Morocco trip. For coastal sights, head west to Marshan, where Café Hafa and Perdicaris Park are, or continue to Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. Central Tangier lies about 23 km east of Cape Spartel. The city has hot, sunny summers and mild, wet winters, with more rain than most parts of North Africa. Frost is rare. Ferries connect Tangier with Spain: several departures a day run from Tangier-Ville to Tarifa, while Tangier-Med connects with Algeciras. Choose your base according to whether you want to stay near the historic lanes or elsewhere in the city.

Tangier FAQ

Is Tangier worth visiting?

Yes for one or two nights. The Kasbah, the medina and the museums are compact, and the city makes a good first or last stop for northern Morocco. It is not a place for a week unless you add Chefchaouen, Tetouan and the coast.

How many days do you need in Tangier?

One full day covers the medina, a Kasbah museum and a walk on the seafront. Two nights let you add Villa Harris and a half day at Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, which the tourist board lists nearby.

Is Tangier safe for tourists?

With normal city care. The UK government says petty crime is common in medina quarters and on beaches, and advises using badged guides. Keep bags closed, avoid quiet streets after dark and agree a taxi fare or use the meter.

Can you visit Tangier as a day trip from Spain?

It is possible but tight. Ferry times depend on the operator and on whether the ticket names the city port or Tangier Med, and border checks add time. Most travelers do better with a night, which also lets you see the medina after the day groups leave.

What is the best way to see the Kasbah and museums?

Start at the Kasbah in the morning, when the lanes are quiet, and plan around the Tuesday closure. The Kasbah museums stand a few meters apart, so you can pair the cultures museum with the contemporary art space in one visit.
