Moulay Idriss Zerhoun

Visit a holy town in Morocco’s Fès-Meknès region, about 3 to 5 kilometers from the Roman and Berber ruins of Volubilis.

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, also called Moulay Idriss, is a pilgrimage town in Morocco’s Fès-Meknès region. It stands on two hills at the base of Mount Zerhoun, about 28 kilometers by road from Meknes and 50 kilometers from Fez. The town is named for Idris I, who founded the Idrisid state and is buried here. Volubilis, a site of Roman and Berber ruins, lies about 3 to 5 kilometers northwest, on the plain below the town.

The town’s two districts, Khiber and Tasga, occupy adjacent hills. Khiber is the taller; from its summit, you can look across the town and its religious complex. The zawiya of Moulay Idris I is in the center, just off the main square, but non-Muslims cannot enter. Nearby, the Sentissi Mosque is now a Qur’anic school and has a green-tiled cylindrical minaret. Each August, a moussem honors Moulay Idris I and draws large crowds. Religious sites are sacred, so dress and behave respectfully during your visit.

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun in five

  1. Pair it with Volubilis on one dayUNESCO describes a 42-hectare Roman city at the foot of Jebel Zerhoun, and the tourist board places it near Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Do the ruins early, then the town, then head back to Meknes.Meknes travel guide
  2. Dress for a working shrine townThe UK government asks visitors to respect local customs and religion. Cover shoulders and knees, keep voices low near the shrine and follow signs about where visitors may and may not go.
  3. Base in Meknes, not hereThe tourist board lists Volubilis among Meknes's sights, and Meknes has the hotels, restaurants and the train. Use it as the base and visit by car, taxi or tour.
  4. Ask before you photograph peopleThe UK government advises asking permission before taking pictures of people, especially children. That applies on shrine approaches and in the market lanes, where worshippers and shopkeepers share the same streets.
  5. Expect crowds around a moussemThe tourist board explains that a moussem is a religious or cultural festival when a region celebrates a saint or tradition. Check locally for dates before you plan a quiet visit.

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun FAQ

Is Moulay Idriss Zerhoun worth visiting?

Yes as a half-day add-on to Volubilis, if you like hillside towns and religious heritage. It is not a monument-by-monument sightseeing stop, so go for the setting and the street life.

How do you get from Meknes to Moulay Idriss?

By car, taxi or a tour. The town sits in the hills near Volubilis, north of Meknes. Ask your hotel about a taxi or a shared grand taxi, agree the fare before you leave and ask when the last return is.

Can you visit Volubilis and Moulay Idriss in one day?

Yes. Start at Volubilis in the morning light, walk or drive to the town for lunch and the lanes, and return to Meknes in the afternoon. Add a night in Meknes if you also want the medina.

Can non-Muslims enter the shrine?

Access rules for shrines are set locally and can change, so follow the signs and ask a guide or local official. Dress modestly in any case, and do not photograph worshippers without permission.

When is the best time to visit Moulay Idriss Zerhoun?

April, May, September and October are the comfortable months, with warm days and open views. July and August are hot, and festival days can bring crowds, so check dates before you go.
